OASIS, SatRAP, RegenAg, and TAPS - projects with interesting names and even bigger impact on water research, agricultural use, and the overall health of the Ogallala Aquifer. Dr. Sumon Datta and Dr. Jeffrey Sadler continue to Extend their knowledge and the reach of their research teams, supporting the Oklahoma Water Resources Center, by working in Oklahoma fields and with Oklahoma producers on irrigation scheduling and well safety.

Week 2 is in the books and it's never too early for a field trip! BAE 1011 students ventured over to visit with Dr. Timothy Bowser and BAE alum Jaymee Zabienski in the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center this week to check out the new Hiperbaric processing equipment and learn about food processing research happening here on campus.

Field work opens the gates for interdepartmental collaboration- and today's example comes to us from Sam Mason, a research engineer with BAE.

"Dr. Bee Chim from plant science and her Grad student Aron Othieno asked me to improve upon their fungus spore trap design. This is it being deployed.
It is a spinning needle spore trap that can spin up to 3000 Rpm. It is an active method for capturing fungal spores for early disease detection and prevention for many different crop species. I took their concept and original model, used 3d printing, steel fabrication, and some electronics to make it better. It is fully independent with solar power and somewhat cost efficient."- Sam Mason

From the small community of Okeene to the stars, Lieu Smith has lived a life that exemplifies "making an impact." In addition to his professional contributions to engineering the interstate highway system and the development of the space program, Lieu Smith's legacy continues through his generosity.

This most recent endowed scholarship, designed to support graduates of Okeene High School furthering their education at Oklahoma State University, joins a host of others made possible by Lieu and Eddie Smith. The Lieu Ray Smith and Kathryn Lorene Whiteturkey Endowed Scholarship, housed within OSU-COM, supports Native-American women pursuing careers as physicians with the Cherokee Nation, named in honor of an impactful educator and her impact on his academic journey. Through his Lieu R. Smith Biosystems and Ag Engineering Discretionary Fund, he supports student scholarships, study abroad experiences, meritorious senior design projects, student organizations and competition teams. This newest scholarship is already impacting our BAE family, with freshman Brayson Roberts as one of the inaugural recipients.

We would like to thank Lieu for his continued support of Oklahoma State University and our BAE students, and for his vision for the future of Oklahoma. Lieu embodies the Cowboy Code and we should all be inspired to do the same.

While our students may be settling into classes, our faculty have been hard at work collaborating with their campus colleagues and popping research bubbles.

BAE's Dr. Kiranmayi Mangalgiri's lab has been working utilizing nanobubble technology to impede the spread of antibiotic resistance stemming from agricultural wastewater. This work builds upon a multidisciplinary project launched late last year, featuring research collaboration Dr. Mark Krzmarzick, head of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

In addition to this morning's post about joining student organizations, including our own student branch of ASABE, there is another exciting announcement from ASABE for our students. BAE students will be seeing a new tool, developed by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), in some of their classes this fall.

Former BAE faculty member, Dr. Carol Jones, provides some insight as to why this tool is preferential for our future engineers and technologists to use in profession-focused research and major-specific assignments (as permitted by their instructional faculty and in accordance with university policy).

Ask ABE is intended to shorten the time spent searching across ASABE resources and help students to connect coursework and professional development with technical and society resources. It is designed to help students, researchers, and emerging professionals discover relevant resources, publications, standards-related information, events, and opportunities through a natural-language interface.

Ways students can use Ask ABE:
-Discover publications and standards-related information
-Locate professional development opportunities
-Learn about committees, communities, and award opportunities
-Use follow-up questions to refine results by topic, supporting research and targeted coursework
