Members of our faculty and staff had the opportunity to attend the Oklahoma Grows conference on October 14-16. They attended educational sessions, the ONLA 100th Anniversary Gala Dinner, and the Greenleaf Nursery Company open house.

During the educational sessions, Dr. Bee Chim presented, "What Does Your Soil Really Need?" and Dr. Chi Nguyen was a panelist for the Breeder Round Table. Great job Dr. Chim and Dr. Nguyen!

While attending the Greenleaf Nursery Company open house, our faculty and staff listened to a message from the Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture, Blayne Arthur.

They had a great experience and enjoyed learning more about our industry through peers and panelists!

From beautiful blooms to a delicious cup of tea! 🌺

Dr. JoHannah Biang's research group and the OSU Student Farm team was busy harvesting hibiscus this Wednesday morning!

Fun fact: Once hibiscus flowers bloom and are pollinated, the petals fall away, leaving behind a developing seed pod surrounded by a vibrant red calyx. Once the calyx reaches approximately 1 inch in size, it’s ready to be harvested!

These bright red calyces are then dried to make the ruby-red hibiscus tea we all enjoy! 🌺🍵

⭐Graduate Student Seminar Spotlight⭐

Our first graduate student spotlight is Zahin Anzum. The title of Zahin's thesis is "Assessment of Genetic Diversity of Nimblewill Germplasm Through Cytological, Molecular and Morphological Analyses."

When asked to highlight his thesis, Zahin said "A breeding program has been initiated at Oklahoma State University (OSU) to improve Nimblewill (Muhlenbergia schreberi J.F. Gmel.), a grass native to North America, as a low-maintenance, shade-tolerant turfgrass that can be established from seed. As part of this program, we have collected germplasm from several states across the United States. My thesis combines both laboratory and field studies. In the laboratory, I am investigating cytological differences among the collected plants. I am also evaluating whether molecular markers developed for bermudagrass can be used to study genetic diversity in Nimblewill and support germplasm characterization and management. In the field, I am assessing Nimblewill families produced through greenhouse hybridization attempts for important turfgrass traits, including drought resistance, color, texture, density, uniformity and winter survival. I will also estimate the extent to which genetic factors contribute to the variation in these traits. This will help identify characteristics that can be improved through selection. Ultimately, my research aims to provide a foundation for future genomic studies and the genetic improvement of Nimblewill."

A powerful new addition to campus is taking root.

On October 12, students, volunteers, and campus partners came together to establish OSU's Heritage Garden in recognition of Oklahoma Native American Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. Designed as a medicine wheel and planted with native Oklahoma species significant to Indigenous communities, the garden honors Indigenous traditions, knowledge, and stewardship while creating opportunities for education, reflection, and sustainability.

One of our very own Horticulture students, Nashoba Giger, represented the OSU Native American Student Association and presented a few words at the ceremony.

Thank you to the OSU Native American Student Association, Environmental Science Club, OSU Landscape Services, the Office of Sustainability, and the Center for Sovereign Nations for helping bring this meaningful vision to life. 💚🌿
