Freya Cordell won the Chairs Choice award for her presentation at the 7th International Sclerochronology Conference at Memorial University in St. John's Newfoundland. Congrats Freya!!!

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Karena Gill, PhD alumna of our department (2022, advised by Dr. Marcello Minzoni), on her appointment as Assistant Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, beginning Fall 2026!

Dr. Gill's research bridges sedimentary geochemistry and astrobiology, with a focus on how evaporite minerals preserve biosignatures — work with direct implications for NASA's Mars Sample Return mission. Since earning her doctorate at UA, she has held a NASA Postdoctoral Collaboratorship at West Virginia University and ASU's prestigious Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship, publishing in Geology, American Mineralogist, and Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.

We are immensely proud of Dr. Gill and everything she has achieved. The geosciences are better because of her. Roll Tide! 🌍🚀

Finals are finished, grades are posted, graduation has occurred. Most faculty and students are buckling down on their research for the summer or students are off to complete internships. My posting will slow down over the summer because as a field geologist, I spend much of the summer out in the field. I wish everyone a happy, peaceful and productive summer.
