Our mission: To form engaged scholarship partnerships across teaching, research and service to generate, transmit, apply and preserve knowledge in collaboration with community partners, and to provide intercultural leadership for the campus and community. Begun in 2004, The Division of Community Affairs is helping The University of Alabama fulfill its mission to advance the intellectual and social
condition of the people of Alabama. We accomplish this through the formation of mutually beneficial community partnerships for engagement scholarship that focus on collaborative efforts across the areas of teaching, research and service while providing intercultural leadership for the campus and community. Realizing the Dream Concert and related activities, and of providing a leadership structure for the University’s annual United Way campaign. Additionally, the Division provides leadership, along with representatives from the partner schools, for the Consortium for Higher Education, and takes a leadership role for the Neighborhood Partnership Committee. The Division supports the efforts of faculty, staff, students and community partners by providing research seed funding, recognition programs and the publication of the Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship (JCES), the leading international peer-reviewed journal on the scholarship of community/university partnerships and engagement. Our initiatives include:
• The Center for Community-Based Partnerships
• Crossroads Community Engagement Center
• The Student Community Engagement Center
• The Council on Community-Based Partnerships
and a host of related programs and efforts.
