Student Experiential Learning Experience

Madison shares her summer working with goats!

"I had the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience working on a goat farm. I assisted with daily care by feeding the goats, learning how to milk a goat, and bottle-feeding the kids!
One of the highlights of my summer was traveling to Indiana to observe a veterinarian perform laparoscopic artificial insemination. I assisted with the goats’ care before and after the procedure and helped safely hold and position them for the veterinarian.
One month later, we tested the goats for pregnancy. I had the opportunity to draw blood and learn how to perform an at-home pregnancy test using the collected samples. This experience taught me more about goat care, reproductive medicine, and the important role veterinarians play in livestock care.
I am grateful for everything I learned this summer, and I cannot wait to welcome the new baby goats in November!"

Student Experiential Learning Experience

Zach Zmuda, a senior, spent his summer as a Quality Assurance Intern at Indiana Packers Corporation!
Zach shared, "I gained hands-on experience in fresh pork processing and food safety. I completed quality audits, verified HACCP and SSOP requirements, and inspected products to ensure they met customer and export specifications. I monitored product temperatures and identified products that did
not meet quality standards for rework. This experience strengthened my understanding of quality assurance and large-scale pork processing."

Student Experiential Learning Expert

Senior, Maggie Gaughan, shares her summer at Park Ridge Animal Hospital!

This summer, I had the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Dimperio, an Illinois graduate and an incredible veterinarian and mentor. Working with both dogs and cats, I assisted with appointments, monitored surgeries, filled prescriptions, sterilizing insurgent's, laboratory work, and more!
This experience has been incredibly valuable to me, allowing me to grow my clinical skills, learn from an amazing veterinary professional, and gain a deeper understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities of the profession. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and growing as I pursue a career in veterinary medicine!

Student Experiential Learning Experience

Animal Science Senior, Catherine, donned a lab coat and navigated the world of pathobiology!

"This summer, I worked at the UIUC Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, assisting in developing a panel of monoclonal antibodies to detect major swine viral pathogens, such as PRRSV and ASFV. I helped screen and characterize monoclonal antibodies that bind to specific swine viral pathogens. These research tools will be critical to develop vaccines and other antiviral measurements. It was a great opportunity to see how research connects to animal health, especially large animals', on a large scale, and it deepened my interest in pathobiology."

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Su A Lee to the Department of Animal Sciences!
Dr. Lee is an innovative researcher focused on swine and poultry nutrition with a passion for vitamin and mineral nutrition and feed ingredient evaluation. Precision nutrition is a passion of hers because it allows animals to receive the right amount of nutrients to maximize growth and health while minimizing nutrient excretion and its impact on the environment. Dr. Lee began her academic journey at Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea, where she earned both her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal Sciences. In 2016, she joined the University of Illinois to pursue her Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. Hans Stein. From 2020 to 2026, she continued working with Dr. Stein as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and later as a Research Scientist, focusing on swine nutrition research. Dr. Lee dreams of teaching a course one day that incorporates two of her great loves; BBQ and Tennis! Envision tennis matches with a side of pork belly! When Dr. Lee isn’t on campus; she is active in her church, playing the piano, or looking for her next favorite sweet treat. While she used to be active in Triathlons, she found her love for tennis during Covid and never looked back. Dr. Lee is also a voracious traveler, visiting 19 countries so far! Dr. Lee brings valuable knowledge and expertise; we are so happy to have her in our department!

Josh, a Junior, spent his summer focusing on large animal Vet Med!

"I have been interning with Clinton County Veterinary Services, a
production animal veterinary clinic in Breese, Illinois that focusses on cattle, swine, sheep, and goats. In my role at this practice, I spent my time assisting with appointments, observing surgical procedures, and learning how to diagnose and treat various conditions in production animals. As a student wanting to pursue food animal medicine in the future, this summer was an incredible learning experience for me and I enjoyed every minute!"
