Sometimes, you find joy in places you never expect. Sometimes it’s in the joy of a stranger you've never met before. These are the moments that make you love what you learn.

Veronica, a psychology major, shares a moment where she found joy in an unexpected place.

“Sunshine “red lady”—I don’t know I was just chasing sunsets, as I do, and this sweet lady happened to be up there [at the] same time as I was. She said ‘I came to take pics too, it’s so beautiful up here.’ It made me want to cry because despite her situation, she found a time and place that brought her simple joys. It made me appreciate everyone even more than I already do.”

The campus will be closed on Monday, September 7 for Labor Day.

When a serene moment makes you stop and notice all the life around you, you start to see what you’ve learned in a different light.

Alina Ramos, an environmental biology major, shares her moment with us.

“I took this at a lake and I began fishing not long after this. I thought about all the life around these areas, the insects, the fish, how they're all so important to these spaces.”

Being able to combine summer fun with what you learned in class truly is the gift that keeps giving.

Karina Escalera, a journalism and media major, shares how her summer internship gave her a chance to apply the skills she learned in class.

“This summer, I completed a multimedia internship in Florida, where I applied the skills I gained from a visual and technology course. My proficiency in InDesign, developed through the course, proved invaluable for editing posters and various design tasks during the internship”.

When life reflects the things you learn in class, learning becomes more meaningful.

Gabriella Doroteo, a psychology major, shares how she saw her studies reflect on her own life

“This photo reminds me of my psychology of personality class. This day I got to be myself to the fullest with my closest friends. In that class, we learned how to fully express ourselves and I feel like I did that there!”

Sometimes, the things you learn in class aren’t just important for your professional growth, but can also help you live a more fulfilling life.

Tiffany Staley Rosenberg, a social work major, shares a special moment that reflects the values she learned in class.

“My photo is a picture taken after my wedding. We had three minutes until it started pouring rain! The photo shows the connections and relationships my husband and I value the most. These friendships help keep us centered and grounded. As a future social worker, building relationships and connections with people will help me remain centered and grounded in life.”

Matthew Howland (image displayed on post) is an assistant professor of anthropology. He shares the skills you learn and the opportunities that open up to you as an anthropology student.

He says, “Students pursuing a degree in anthropology or archaeology gain skills that are valuable for careers both within archaeology and beyond.”

(Slide 2)
“This combination of technical skills and softer skills of communication and writing are valuable in cultural resource management, a growing field that is expected to employ thousands of additional archaeologists in coming years. They are also valuable in a broad range of careers, where the ability to work as a team and use evidence to construct a strategy that advances key objectives is the essential groundwork for any professional.”
