Tomorrow, South Africans head to the polls for the 2026 local government elections. With infrastructure challenges and municipal service delivery failures affecting towns and cities across the country, the decisions made at local government level carry significant weight.

The devastating floods in Gauteng in 2025 and KwaZulu-Natal in 2022 highlighted how inadequate stormwater management and poorly maintained drainage infrastructure can compound the impact of extreme rainfall. The resulting damage to homes, properties and valuable possessions demonstrated just how vulnerable assets can be when infrastructure fails.

Well-maintained municipal infrastructure, effective stormwater management and responsible local governance are essential to mitigating these risks.

As you prepare to vote, consider the leadership and priorities that will shape the future of South Africa's infrastructure and influence the risks facing your property and valuable possessions.

Your vote matters when it comes to protecting what you own.

What does it mean to insure a home when the weather itself is becoming less predictable? For Tandiwe Cimela, Executive of Elite Risk, it means thinking differently about how homeowners prepare for risk.

While weather-related losses have always formed part of the insurance landscape, Tandiwe says the frequency, severity and unpredictability of events are changing.

Flooding, for example, remains a significant concern in South Africa. The devastating 2022 KZN floods demonstrated the scale of losses that extreme rainfall can cause, while the Western and Eastern Cape experienced significant flooding in May this year. Yet the Western Cape can move rapidly from one type of weather risk to another – experiencing severe flooding and, weeks later, facing concerns around reduced rainfall, drought and heightened wildfire risk.

“As an insurer, we are no longer preparing for a single seasonal peril but for multiple climate-related risks occurring in quick succession,” says Tandiwe.

For owners of valuable possessions, keeping proper records is an important part of protecting them.

Professional valuation certificates, purchase receipts, certificates of authenticity, auction or dealer records, restoration records, serial numbers and other identifying marks can all help establish an item's history and value.

An item's provenance – the documented history of its ownership – can easily be lost as possessions are passed between family members.

“We've seen situations where an item's value becomes difficult to substantiate because certificates, valuations or family records have been lost over time. In some cases, the documentation can be almost as valuable as the item itself,” says Tandiwe Cimela, Executive of Elite Risk, who recently discussed this subject in Cover Magazine. Thank you for the coverage!

One of the most common areas of misunderstanding when it comes to car hire in the event of an accident comes down to the vehicle hire benefit on a policy.

It is easy to assume that because you drive a luxury vehicle, the rental vehicle provided while yours is being repaired will be of a similar standard. It is an understandable assumption, but it is not necessarily the case.

Vehicle hire defaults to Economy Car Hire unless Luxury Car Hire is specifically selected during the quotation process.

This is an easy detail to overlook when arranging their insurance. But when your vehicle is off the road, the difference between an economy rental and a luxury replacement can have a real impact on your day to day routine.

It is worth asking your adviser what vehicle hire option is included in your policy, and whether it reflects your expectations.

13 October marks the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, with this year’s theme: “Resilience Starts at Home.”

At the 2026 Elite Wealth Conference, Tandiwe Cimela, Executive Head of Elite Risk Acceptances, spoke about the importance of resilience in an increasingly uncertain world.

As she put it:
“While intelligence enables us to identify opportunities, it is resilience that sustains success over time.”

For high net worth households, building resilience means thinking ahead about what you want to protect. This includes your home, valuable possessions and the assets that matter most to you.

Understanding the risks you face, keeping your insurance arrangements up to date and protecting what you don’t want to lose are all part of being prepared.

A recent widespread power outage across Cape Town’s northern suburbs and those along the Atlantic seaboard is a useful reminder that power interruptions can create a range of risks.

For high-value homes, an unexpected outage can affect:
• Security: CCTV, alarms, electric fencing and access control may rely on backup power.
• Smart-home systems: Home automation and other connected systems can be disrupted.
• Valuable assets: Temperature-sensitive collections, specialist equipment and other high-value items may be affected by prolonged outages.
• Electronics: Power surges when electricity is restored can damage sensitive and expensive equipment.
• Backup systems: Generators, inverters and batteries also need to be correctly installed, maintained and protected.

Using suitable surge protection for sensitive electronic equipment can help protect valuable appliances and technology when power is restored.

To celebrate Heritage Month in September, we asked members of the Elite team to share what heritage means to them. Scroll down to read the stories of Basetsana, Ragiem, and Mishqah.

✨ Basetsana Nkoane, Quality Assurance Specialist ✨
Heritage, to me, is about people. As a proud descendant of Venda, Pedi, and Ndebele roots, my story is shaped not only by where I come from, but also by the many people who have influenced my journey. From family, friends, mentors, neighbours, and communities across South Africa and beyond, each has shared lessons in pride, resilience, kindness, faith, and belonging. Growing up in diverse environments exposed me to different cultures, languages, and traditions, teaching me that some of life's greatest lessons come from people rather than textbooks. Along the way, I gained family from cultures different from my own. Heritage lives in our stories, values, traditions, and shared experiences. It reminds us where we come from, but also celebrates the people who help shape who we become.

✨ Ragiem Meyer, Team Leader: Valuations ✨
Growing up in a Muslim household, heritage was woven into my family traditions, community, and celebration. Eid remains one of my fondest memories, from helping prepare homemade treats and visiting family, friends, and neighbours, to sharing meals and creating lasting memories together. At the same time, having Christian family members meant I was also fortunate enough to experience Christmas traditions, where simple acts of inclusion, like receiving Christmas stockings alongside my cousins, taught me the value of belonging and shared celebration. Looking back, these experiences gave me a deep appreciation for diversity and showed me that heritage is about far more than culture or religion alone. It is about family, community, shared experiences, and the values we learn from one another that shape who we become.

✨ Mishqah Benjamin, Specialist Underwriter ✨
Heritage is deeply rooted in faith, family, and the values that shape my daily life. As a Muslim woman, wife, mother, and soon-to-be mother of two daughters, I see heritage as more than traditions passed down through generations. I inherited a sense of belonging from my parents and now hope to pass on to her children. My faith guides how I approach everyday life, while motherhood has strengthened my commitment to creating a legacy of strong values and meaningful connections. Heritage is about honouring where I come from, appreciating those who paved the way, and ensuring that my family's story, values, and sense of belonging continue for generations to come.
