“Beauty in the Dark explores the contrast between outward beauty and hidden pain. By day (Beauty), the woman presents elegance, confidence, and a constant smile, appearing strong and perfect to the world. Yet behind this beauty lies silent suffering and unrecognised effort. When night falls (Dark), the garments transform into darker, dramatic forms, revealing the emotional weight, resilience, and silent effort behind the smile. In the darkest moments, she begins to lose faith and even questions her will to live. But in the depths of that darkness, a light appears.

“My collection, MMAKGOMO, explores the relationship between structure, movement and identity through sculptural silhouettes, fabric manipulation and organic, ink-inspired prints. I was inspired by architecture, the way shapes interact with space, and the beauty of imperfection found in organic forms. I wanted to experiment with how fabric can be transformed beyond its traditional use through fabric manipulation , exaggerated shapes and intricate details, creating garments that feel expressive, almost like wearable sculptures.

Ultimately, the collection is about exploring my identity as a designer through construction, texture and form, while creating pieces that feel distinctive, intentional and thought provoking.” Amogelang Kgomo

“My collection was inspired by the beauty and depth of blue, translating the fluidity of water, the movement of ocean life, and the organic forms found in nature into sculptural silhouettes. Nakedi”

At its heart, the collection celebrates the beauty and identity of isishweshwe and the richness of Southern African fashion. It is a reminder that before we look outward for inspiration, we should first look within to our own heritage, our stories, and our understanding of beauty.

This is who we are. This is where we come from. And this deserves to be celebrated.

What if waste was never really waste? ♻️✨

This collection explores sustainability through transformation taking discarded and existing materials and reimagining them into garments that carry new purpose, identity and value.

Inspired by nature’s constant cycle of change and renewal, the collection embraces raw textures, organic forms, unconventional construction and sculptural silhouettes. Every detail becomes part of a conversation about how we create, consume and redefine what we consider valuable.

Rather than hiding imperfections, the garments celebrate them showing that sustainable fashion can be experimental, expressive and visually powerful.

Less waste. More imagination. A new life for what already exists. 🌱

This is an open call to students, emerging designers, makers and thinkers across Africa to explore the future of textiles through regeneration, material innovation and indigenous knowledge systems. Participants are invited to develop a 30cm x 30cm textile, material, or concept that responds to the question:

What does an African textile future look like when it restores ecosystems, centres local knowledges and materials, and reimagines production?

Important dates:

13 July: Deadline for phase 1

22 July: Deadline for submission of prototype

31 July and 1 August: Exhibition at Africa Textile Talks
