If you’re finishing matric right now, you’re about to make one of the biggest decisions of your life so far, and it can feel like everyone expects you to already have it figured out. You don’t. But it helps to know your options properly. Here’s one a lot of school-leavers overlook. Our BCom in Financial Management is a full degree you study 100% online. That’s not a small detail: it means no residence fees, no daily transport, no moving to another city, costs that often add up to more than the tuition itself, and that put a degree out of reach for a lot of capable people. Instead, you study from home, at a pace you can manage, with dedicated support teams and lecturers who are genuinely there for you (online really doesn’t mean on your own). Every so often, you work alongside someone who makes you look at a whole profession differently. For us, that’s Sinethemba Mzila PL(SA).

Sinethemba is our Digital Academic Librarian at Moonstone Business School of Excellence, and she’s quietly redefining what an academic librarian does. Her work sits right at the meeting point of research support, artificial intelligence and digital transformation, the place where the future of the profession is actually being built.

The recognition has followed. Sinethemba is a LIASA Research Support Librarian Award finalist for the second year running, named in both 2025 and 2026, which is no small thing in a field she clearly loves. Alongside that, she’s built a serious portfolio of credentials spanning AI, cloud computing and more: AWS Certified AI Practitioner, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Python and SEO certifications, and a dozen others in emerging tech.

But what stands out most isn’t the list. It’s the thinking behind it. Sinethemba is genuinely interested in the hard questions this moment raises. AI literacy, ethical technology adoption, academic integrity, and in making sure the library remains a place that turns access to information into real, meaningful knowledge. At MBSE, that shows up in digital library services that quietly make life better for our students, researchers and lecturers every day.

As she takes part in the LIASA Conference, she’s doing exactly what she always does: not just keeping pace with change, but helping shape where it goes.

If you’re already working in financial services without a formal qualification behind you, you’ll know the quiet ceiling it creates, the roles you can’t quite move into, the fit-and-proper requirements hanging over you, the sense of doing the work without the credential to match.

It’s a number that should make us talk about debt more honestly than we do: a large share of credit-active South Africans are struggling to keep up with what they owe. Behind that statistic are ordinary people, not reckless, not irresponsible, just caught in a system where it’s remarkably easy to fall behind and hard to climb back.

The good news, and the whole point of this piece, is that there is a way back, and it’s more structured and less overwhelming than it feels when you’re in it. Willem van der Westhuizen sets out a practical plan: get clear on the full picture of what you owe, tackle it in the right order, and build the habits that stop it creeping back.

Today, thousands of matriculants sit down to write the exams they’ve been building towards for twelve years. If that’s you, take a breath. You are more ready than the nerves are telling you. A few things worth holding onto over the next few weeks: sleep matters more than one extra hour of cramming. Read each question properly before you answer. And when a paper feels hard, remember that ‘hard’ usually means it’s hard for everyone, not just you ,so keep going. Whatever comes next ,university, a gap year, work, or an online qualification you can start from home ,this season doesn’t define your whole future. It’s one step. For now, just focus on doing your best, one paper at a time. We’re cheering you on.

The two-pot system made it possible to access part of your retirement savings early, and the word ‘savings’ makes it feel like spare cash for a holiday, school fees or renovations. It isn’t. It’s money set aside for the version of you that’s no longer earning a salary.

And the true cost of dipping in is far bigger than the amount you take out. Left invested for another 20 years at an average 8% return, R10 000 today could grow to roughly R46 600. (That’s an illustration only, it doesn’t account for fees, tax or changing returns, but the point stands: a small withdrawal now can mean giving up a lot more later.)

The savings component is genuinely valuable in a real emergency. But before withdrawing, it’s worth asking: is this essential, can it wait, and what will it cost my future retirement? Having access to the money doesn’t make spending it a good decision.
