The RE1 examination raises a lot of questions, especially for candidates preparing for the first time.

Here are the answers to the ones we hear most often:

Do I need formal qualifications?
No. There are no formal admission requirements for RE1. What you need is a thorough understanding of the FAIS Act, regulatory frameworks and Key Individual responsibilities.

Is my experience enough?
Industry experience is valuable context, but RE1 tests specific legislative knowledge and its application. Experience alone is rarely sufficient preparation.

How long should I prepare?
MBSE's six-week structured study plan is designed to take you from the beginning to exam-ready. 12 months access means you can move at a pace that works around your schedule.

What if I fail?
You can rewrite. But the cost, financially and in terms of confidence, is avoidable with the right preparation from the start.

Where do I begin?
With a structured programme built for this exact purpose.

Launch price: R1 550 (incl. VAT), saving R1 300 off full price of R2 850
Offer valid until 31 August 2026.

There is a reason some RE1 candidates walk into the examination feeling ready, and others walk in hoping for the best.

The difference is almost always structure.

MBSE's RE1 Training Programme was built specifically around how financial services professionals actually learn, busy schedules, competing priorities, and the need to understand legislation deeply enough to apply it under exam conditions.

What the MBSE difference looks like:
- A clear six-week study plan, no guessing what to study or in what order
- Weekly learning that builds progressively, so each module reinforces the last
- Self-assessments throughout, to identify gaps before exam day, not during it
- 12 months access, so the material remains available as you prepare at your own pace
- No admission requirements, start when you are ready

Launch price: R1 550 (incl. VAT) saving R1 300 off the full price of R2 850
Launch offer valid until 31 August 2026.

Formative Assessment 1 is behind you, and that deserves a moment of acknowledgement.

Completing an assessment while balancing work, family and the general demands of life in South Africa is no small thing. Be proud of yourself for showing up.

Now, a gentle heads-up: Formative Assessment 2 opens on 26 August.

Use the time between now and then to:
✔ Review any topics you felt less confident about
✔ Work through practice questions
✔ Revisit your notes and flag sections to reference during the open book assessment
✔ Reach out to your lecturer if anything needs more clarity, do not wait until the last minute

You have already proven you can do this. Now let us build on it.

The RE1 examination exists for a reason.

A Key Individual is not simply a senior employee. In terms of the FAIS Act, a Key Individual is accountable for the management and oversight of the financial services activities of an FSP, and that responsibility is significant.

What the role actually demands:

Governance: Ensuring the FSP operates within the FAIS regulatory framework, not just when it is convenient, but consistently.

Accountability: Owning the FSP's compliance function, understanding its obligations and ensuring those obligations are met.

Client Protection: Ensuring that advice given by representatives is appropriate, compliant and genuinely in the client's best interest.

Leadership: Developing representatives, managing performance and taking the necessary steps, including debarment, when standards are not met.

The RE1 examination assesses whether a candidate truly understands what this role requires. Passing it is not the finish line, it is the beginning.

MBSE's RE1 Training Programme prepares you for the examination and for the responsibility that follows.

South Africa has no shortage of great ideas.

What separates the businesses that make it from the ones that stay ideas is what happens after the lightbulb moment, the planning, the structure, the decisions that turn a vision into something real and sustainable.

Starting a business takes more than passion and a good product. It takes an understanding of how to build correctly from the ground up.

Over the next few weeks, MBSE will be sharing practical insights into what it really takes to start a business in South Africa, from the first steps to understanding the frameworks that protect and legitimise your venture.

Whether you are an aspiring entrepreneur, a side-hustle professional, or someone who has been thinking about taking the leap, follow along. This content is for you.
