“For 72 years now, I’ve been able to go back to Ethiopia... we are seeing the Lord do some wonderful things. In areas where there were no Bibles, no churches, today there are well over 1,000 churches.”

Dick McLellan arrived at SMBC a few days after his 20th birthday, in 1952. “The Lord had called me, I believe, as a missionary to Africa. While I was at SMBC, I heard of the great need there was in Ethiopia.”

When Dick arrived in Ethiopia with his wife, Vida, he literally built the roads to reach unreached people with the gospel. Now the country that was once a mission field is sending missionaries of its own.

Dick, who is in his nineties, recently returned to Ethiopia to preach in Amharic to a convention of 40,000 people, where he was given a traditional gift in honour of his ministry.

As part of celebrating 110 years of SMBC, we sat down with Dick to get a taste of his amazing story of seeing God at work in powerful ways.

Growing up with missionary parents in West Africa, Ruth wanted to do something "grand" for God with her life. She came to Bible college to grow her heart for God's church and the lost. She discovered a God who is bigger than her dreams, who deepened her passion to share the gospel, and who equipped her for a new chapter of faithful ministry she never expected. Ruth has discovered there’s more than one way to live a grand life for God.

Israel’s kings have failed, and Ahab is the worst of them, chasing Baal and provoking the Lord. Enter Elijah.

In 1 Kings 17, God shows that He alone shuts the skies, sustains life and raises the dead. In the heart of Baal’s homeland, during a devastating drought, God’s sovereign might is revealed in the faith of a Gentile widow. She is resigned to death, yet finds life when she welcomes Elijah.

But Elijah is not the hero, rather, his life and the events in 1 Kings 17 point us forward to Christ, the ultimate display of God’s power to save and sustain the life of His people. With Christ the real hero, Elijah is then used by James, as one who models faith for ordinary believers taking God at His word.

Being a Christian involves ‘following’ the Lord Jesus, not around Galilee and Judea, but in the course of our daily lives. The four Gospels provide four different records of what Jesus said and did. They are the foundation for knowing and understanding what he has done for us, as well as what he said about God and his will. If we really want to ‘follow’ Jesus, if we really want to be salt and light in our world, then the Gospels need to be our regular reading matter.

In this unit we study the different contributions that each Gospel makes to this portrait of Jesus, his life and words, his death and resurrection. Be prepared to listen to Jesus’ words and ponder his meaning, both for disciples in the first century and in the twenty first century. Be ready to encounter Jesus in a fresh way, as we examine the four Gospels of the New Testament.

As SMBC celebrates 110 years of ministry, we praise God for his constant faithfulness and wonderful provision.
