The Japanese-Australian artist, Mitsuo Shoji has cultivated a thoughtful dialogue with clay for six decades, developing a practice that reflects both mastery and continual invention. Born and trained in Japan before eventually settling in Australia via the United States, Shoji has become one of the most influential figures in Australian ceramics, shaping generations of artists through his work and teaching.

This exhibition presents a selection of works spanning the breadth of Shoji’s oeuvre, from refined functional vessels to sculpture, installation and his innovative ceramic paintings. Together, these works reveal an artist driven by curiosity, whose lifelong engagement with material and process continues to generate new possibilities.

They are shaped by personal, generational and collective memory, by activism, and by the specificity of place. An encounter may be a first meeting—unexpected, surprising and unfamiliar—or a return to something known, revealed anew through a different perspective. In every instance, it is an intimate exchange.

Since 1992, Hatched has exhibited the work of more than 1,400 art school graduates, selected by a panel of nationally acclaimed artists and curators.

Incredible metalsmithing by SCA staff currently on show across two exhibitions.

Opening Sunday 26 July in Marrickville, Brewed at O(L)D brings together handcrafted objects by ten contemporary designers and makers, including current SCA staff member Kenny Son Kenny Yong-soo Son and Associate Lecturer Oliver Smith.

Centred on objects associated with coffee and tea, the exhibition considers the material cultures, social rituals and embodied practices that shape how these beverages are prepared, served and experienced.

Also currently showing at Sevenmarks Gallery Gallery, Still Making: Robert Foster 10-Year Memorial Exhibition reflects on the legacy of influential Australian designer and silversmith Robert Foster.

Led by SCA Senior Technician and academic Cobi Cockburn with Associate Lecturer Oliver Smith among the 10 participating artists, the exhibition brings together significant works by Foster with new responses by ten artists who collaborated with him or whose practices were shaped by his ideas.

The Fauvette Loureiro Memorial Scholarships support Sydney College of Arts (SCA) graduates to pursue a program of professional development through travel. The scholarships are open to all SCA alumni across two categories: a $15,000 Emerging Scholarship and a $30,000 Mid-career/Established Scholarship.

Sydney College of the Arts is excited to announce the finalists of the SCA Alumni Fauvette Loureiro Memorial Scholarship 2026. 

Mid-Career/Established Finalists: 
Helga Groves, Locust Jones, Sara Morawetz, Tina Stefanou, Kai Wasikowski 

Emerging Finalists: 
Melanie Booth, Jack Harman, Benita Laylim, Jack Wotton

The judging panel for this year’s Fauvette Loureiro Memorial Scholarships included Professor Julie Rrap, Co-Director of SCA, Rachel Kent, CEO of Bundanon, and artist Judy Watson. 

Two scholarship recipients will be announced at the exhibition opening on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
