Michelle, a 2017 graduate of the BSc (Hons) in Medical Laboratory Science at , is now a Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist in a hospital. Passionate about science since childhood, especially bacteria and viruses, Michelle sees this profession as more than exploring the unknown - it is a responsibility.

【以科技連結回憶　東華學院 VR 長者精神健康研究落地四川】

東華學院「數碼精神健康轉化研究中心」研究團隊上周到訪四川成都，與四川長江職業學院及四川萬瑞森雅康養產業有限公司攜手啟動「共融虛擬實境與長者精神健康計劃研究項目」，共同提升長者精神健康水平。

學院自 2023 年開展相關研究，讓長者透過 VR 短片進行懷緬治療。研究結果顯示，參加者的精神健康、抑鬱症狀、生活品質及感知社會支持均有明顯改善。其後，團隊進一步將研究成果轉化應用，協助更多安老院舍把 VR 融入日常服務。

是次項目由學院數碼精神健康轉化研究中心四川分中心主導，並提供 VR 技術及研究支持；四川長江職業學院則以四川本地素材製作短片，並培訓學生與長者互動，促進跨代共融；項目將在四川萬瑞森雅康養產業有限公司旗下 6 家養老機構開展，並提供專業照護支持，預計有400名長者參與。三方攜手，將共同探索結合科技與人文關懷的長遠長者服務模式。

領導項目的校長陳慧慈教授表示，學院一直積極推動產教融合及川港合作，期望以是次協作為起點，支援長者精神健康，配合「十五五」時期建設「健康中國」的目標，並搭建長期穩定的醫教研合作平台，為日後的科研合作及成果轉化奠定基礎。

【Connecting Memories through Technology: Tung Wah College Extends VR Mental Health Research Project to Sichuan】

The research team from Tung Wah College (TWC)’s Translational Research Centre for Digital Mental Health (TRC-DMH) visited Chengdu, Sichuan last week to launch the “Inclusive Virtual Reality (VR) and Mental Well-being in Older Adults” research project in collaboration with Sichuan Changjiang Vocational College and Sichuan Wanrui Senya Health Industry, with an aim of further promoting older adults’ mental well-being.

TWC launched this mental health research project for older adults in 2023, enabling participants to receive reminiscence therapy through VR videos. The findings revealed significant improvements in mental health, depression symptoms, health-related quality of life, and perceived social support among participants. Since then, the team has translated the research findings into practice, helping more elderly care homes integrate VR into their daily services.

The project is led by TWC’s TRC-DMH affiliated centre in Sichuan. The College will provide VR technology and research support; Sichuan Changjiang Vocational College will use local Sichuan cultural elements to produce videos and train students to interact with older adults, fostering intergenerational integration; The project will be implemented across six elderly care facilities under Sichuan Wanrui Senya Health Industry, providing professional care support; an estimated 400 seniors are expected to participate. Together, the three partners will explore a sustainable service model that integrates technology with humanistic care.

Professor Sally Chan, President of TWC who leads the research project, said that the College actively promotes industry–education integration and Sichuan–Hong Kong collaboration. She expressed the hope that the project would support older adults’ mental health, contribute to the development of “Healthy China” during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, and establish a long-term medical–education–research collaboration platform for future research and knowledge transfer.

TWC held Health Day 2026 at Tsim Sha Tsui Community Hall last Saturday (17 October). Co-organised with the Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association (TSTKFA), the event attracted nearly 900 attendees, who learned about brain health and mental well-being, and promoted the principle that “prevention is better than cure” through health talk 🗣️, health screenings 🩺 and interactive game booths. 🎯
