Not all pathways to university look the same.

Higher education isn't a one-size-fits-all journey. Whether you're a school-leaver or returning to education as a mature student, there are different routes to achieving your goals.

The University of Galway Access Programmes are designed to support students from under-represented groups who may not follow a traditional pathway into higher education.

🎓 Congratulations to everyone who completed this year's Educational Transition Project (ETP) at University of Galway.

Last Friday, we were delighted to celebrate participants at a special ceremony on campus, recognising their commitment, hard work and achievements throughout the programme.

Delivered by the Access Centre in partnership with the the Office of the Vice President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, the ETP supports Irish Travellers, International Protection Applicants, refugees and other underrepresented communities to develop the skills and confidence to progress to further and higher education.

The programme provides a supportive learning environment for participants working towards their educational and employment goals.

Congratulations to all of this year's participants, and thank you to everyone who helped make the programme such a success. Here is just a sample of photos from the day.

Celebrating Cumas work placements

The final two students in our work placement series experienced very different workplaces, each building skills aligned with their interests and future goals.

During her placement with Uni4U, Emer supported activities for primary school pupils, helping with games and teamwork activities as part of the University's outreach programme.

Jerryn completed her placement in the Medical Secretary's Department at University Hospital Galway, where she gained experience in administration, paperwork and typing while exploring her ambition of becoming a medical secretary.

Congratulations to Emer and Jerryn on everything they achieved during their placements.

The Cumas Programme, led by the Access Centre and the School of Education, supports people with an intellectual disability to continue their learning in an inclusive university environment. Students who successfully complete the programme receive a Level 5 Certificate in Foundational Learning and Community.

Celebrating Cumas work placements

Cumas students completed placements in a wide range of roles across campus, developing confidence while working with staff, students and the wider community.

Ciaran, Thérèse and Leah all experienced customer-facing and community-focused placements.

Whether serving customers in Saol Café, welcoming visitors at the Kingfisher Club or gaining experience with the Community Engagement team, each placement provided opportunities to build communication skills, confidence and workplace experience.

Well done to Ciaran, Thérèse and Leah on completing their placements.

Every work placement offers students the opportunity to experience a different side of university life.

Kieran, Conal and Michelle completed placements in essential campus services, helping to keep the University running every day.

From working with the Library team, learning how the Mail Room operates and using the franking machine, to gaining hands-on experience in gardening and landscaping, each student developed valuable new skills and confidence.

Celebrating Cumas work placements

Work placement is an important part of the Cumas Programme, giving students the opportunity to develop practical skills, build confidence and experience different workplaces across the University.

Amy, Daniel and Natasha each completed placements supporting student-facing services, developing skills in administration, digital communications and office environments.

Their experiences included learning Canva, creating posters, using Microsoft Teams, developing administrative skills and supporting day-to-day office activities.
