NUI Galway's Access Centre is concerned with the development, promotion and delivery of programmes of learning for targeted individuals, it involves a wide range of educational approaches and specialist services targeted at large numbers of students who are classified by the Higher Education Authority as 'non-traditional.'

The Access Centre helps individuals realise their educational potential irrespective of their educational background, age or personal health circumstances. It provides support for students participating on access programmes, students with disabilities and mature students. Any urgent queries or service related queries should be made directly to our office via email or phonecall.

🎓 Dillon Family Scholarship Opportunity

Are you a first-year Business student at the University of Galway from Clare, Donegal or Waterford? You may be eligible for the Dillon Family Scholarship, established by University of Galway alumnus David Dillon and Carol Dillon to support students who would benefit from financial assistance while pursuing their studies.

What’s included?
💶 €2,500 per year
🎓 Funding for the duration of your undergraduate degree (subject to academic progression)

Eligibility Applicants must:
• Be a Year 1 undergraduate student in the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics
• Be from Clare, Donegal or Waterford
• Demonstrate financial need and meet eligibility criteria, including SUSI, HEAR, DARE, Mature, FETAC or Access entry routes

A great visit to High Cross College last week!🏫

As part of our ongoing school outreach, our Outreach Team, Róisín and Máire Bríd, visited High Cross College to deliver a HEAR, DARE & Access information session to Leaving Certificate students, sharing information on the range of supports and pathways available to help students progress to higher education.

Thank you to the staff and students at High Cross College, Tuam for the warm welcome and excellent engagement throughout the session. ✨

Cumas means ability. 💙

A proud moment for our former Cumas students and colleagues at the Meeting of EU Directors for Higher Education, held as part of Ireland’s EU Presidency! 🇪🇺

Former students Leah and Conol, alongside their lecturer Amanda Corbett, shared their experiences of Cumas and the difference inclusive higher education can make. Their contributions were recognised by Minister of State Marian Harkin TD.

Our colleague Jackie Murphy also showcased Cumas as an example of inclusive higher education in action, highlighting the importance of belonging, student voice and shared learning.

Delivered in partnership by the Access Centre and School of Education, with support from the HEA’s PATH 4 Phase 2, Cumas is helping students with intellectual disabilities learn, participate and belong at university.

👏 Fantastic to see our students and colleagues bringing Cumas to a European stage!

Are you a final-year undergraduate law student (or taking law as a major subject). Applications are NOW OPEN for the Public Law Internship Programme 2027!

Get 2 months of paid experience starting June 2027 with Ireland's leading public legal bodies (including the Houses of the Oireachtas, Attorney General’s Office, DPP, and Legal Aid Board).

Who can apply?
Final-year undergrad Law (or Law major) students who qualify under one or more:
- Pathway 1: Entered HE via HEAR, DARE, Mature route, or Access route
- Pathway 2: SUSI Band 1 Full Maintenance or Special Rate Grant
- Pathway 3: Registered with the Access / Disability Support Service

A great start to the Professional Engagement Module (PEM) with University of Galway's School of Education as part of our Access Programme!✨

Our students recently met with the School of Education team and their mentors to begin a six-week journey focused on building confidence, communication, leadership, and professional skills.

From presentation skills and technology-enhanced learning to coaching and effective communication, there's lots to look forward to in the weeks ahead. ⭐

A special thank you to our mentors for sharing their time, experience, and guidance with our students throughout the programme.

University of Galway Students & Grads - Thinking about a masters abroad?🌍

The 2027 George Moore Scholars (GMS) programme is a scholarship programme, offering financial support (€25,000 to €80,000 per year) to cover tuition and living costs for Master’s degrees across the US, UK, Canada, and Europe.

The George Moore Scholars strongly encourage applications from Access, HEAR, DARE, and alternative route students (graduating in 2027 or alumni from 2021–2026).

💡 Key Details:
- Open to all disciplines: Arts, STEM, Social Sciences, Health, Law, and Creative Arts.

Join our Body Doubling Study Sessions, a sensory-friendly study environment where you can borrow fidgets and weighted blankets while studying. Hosted by the Access Centre.

📅 Semester 1: 28 October - 16 December

Simply arrive at 2pm, get settled, and take part in two 45-minute focused study sessions with a 15-minute break in between.
