The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance is a centre of academic and performance excellence housed at the University of Limerick, Ireland. The Academy honours the energies of performance and academic reflection across a wide range of genres and disciplines. These in turn are informed by innovative community outreach and artist-in-residence initiatives that take the Academy to the wider communit

y while attracting a wealth of international performance and scholarly expertise. Founded in 1994 by Professor Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, it has come to find its true home on the beautiful banks of the River Shannon in a state of the art building, which includes two theatres, recording studio, individual practice rooms and dance studios, provides and inspiring creative space for all those who study there. The Academy has a strong international presence with students from over 40 countries studying there. With a stellar faculty of excellent performers, incredible academics and industry professionals the experience of studying at the Irish World Academy second to none. It offers a suite of taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in music and dance related subject areas and its research is at the forefront of these fields of enquiry worldwide. “Giving Grief a Voice” is a performance that brings my PhD research to life through original musical works created throughout my doctoral journey. These pieces explore grief and loss from different perspectives. Performance of skill and imagination are to be expected, exploring the range of possibilities that lie within Irish traditional music. The final performances of the BA students in Irish Music are unique and exceptional performance events. Students have the opportunity to present their performance practice in ensemble and solo forms, the culmination of four year’s work, study and practice, in the professional environment of Theatre 1 at the Irish World Academy. This will result in a feast of traditional music and song like no other.

MA Classical String Performance Exams

These solo and chamber music recitals feature the culmination of the semester's work by the MA in Classical String Performance students. The MA Classical String Performance at the Irish World Academy is a unique programme offering advanced tuition in violin, viola, cello, and double bass. The programme is led by principal players of the Irish Chamber Orchestra who tutor, rehearse and perform with the students.
