Join us on 𝟮𝟬 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗮𝘁 𝟵:𝟬𝟬 𝗮.𝗺. for a guest lecture by 𝗝ö𝗿𝗴 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝘇𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗻 (Mozarteum / University of Salzburg and Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg).

The lecture explores The Ingenues, an all-female musical ensemble active in the American Midwest from 1925 to 1937, and their place in the vibrant entertainment culture of the interwar period.

Drawing on early sound films, the talk examines how audiovisual recordings reveal musical performance, stage presence, and ensemble interaction, while shedding light on the relationship between women, music, cinema, and urban modernity.

A case study of cellist 𝗔𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗱 will offer insights into instrumental technique, professional identity, and the representation of female musicians on screen.

🌿🍃 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀: 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗻 🌿💚

🍃 As we pause on Sunday, we turn our attention to The National Trust and another beautiful aspect of England’s natural heritage: its birds and the changes autumn brings.

🌿 From light-bellied Brent geese arriving for the winter to waxwings searching for berries, birdwatching can reveal fascinating stories about seasonal change and the journeys birds make across the world. 🪿🍒💚💚🍃

🌿 From “the early bird catches the worm” and “birds of a feather flock together” to “a little bird told me,” “to spread your wings,” “as free as a bird,” “to take someone under your wing,” “to have a bird’s-eye view,” and “one swallow does not make a summer,” English is full of colourful bird expressions that bring nature, wisdom, and humour into everyday language.

🌿🕊️ Birds have also long held a special place in fiction and poetry, symbolising freedom, hope, love, loss, and the mysteries of life. From the raven in Shakespeare’s Macbeth to the nightingale in John Keats’s poetry to the hopeful thrush in Thomas Hardy’s The Darkling Thrush, birds often become more than part of the natural world; they often serve as a way for writers to explore the boundaries between the human and the natural world, giving shape to emotions, uncertainties, and desires that are otherwise difficult to express.

💜🌿𝐎𝐟𝐟-𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐎 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥. 𝐀𝐫𝐭, 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐬 💜🌿

What does it mean to feel real in a world increasingly shaped by technology? How does artificial intelligence influence our choices, identities, and relationships? And how much control do we really have over the digital systems that surround us?

💜🌿For our latest 𝐎𝐟𝐟-𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭, students from 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 and 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬, together with students from the 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞, visited the 𝐌𝐎 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 to explore the exhibition How to Feel Real. Art, Technology and Us.

💜🌿Our special thanks go to our guide, 𝐊𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐣𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬 𝐆𝐮𝐤𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐤𝐚𝐬, for his exceptional presentation. His knowledge of the exhibition, researched explanations, and ability to bring its ideas to life left us inspired and eager to continue the conversation.

💜🌿 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫, an English Philology student currently undertaking her Intercultural Communication internship, prepared this short reflection as part of her internship assignment on one of the sections of the MO Museum exhibition:

💜🌿“The Automation and Intelligence section examines humanity’s long-standing ambition to automate decisions, predict outcomes, and make everyday life easier.

Artificial intelligence is often presented as a driver of progress, but AI systems are not inherently neutral. They can reproduce social biases and gender norms, rely on human labour, and depend on physical infrastructure such as data centres, which require energy, cooling systems, and water.

These processes often remain hidden from users. By bringing them into focus, the exhibition encourages a closer look at the systems behind the technologies we use every day — and the assumptions embedded within them.”

💜🌿Indeed, technology promises progress, convenience, and connection — yet it can also reproduce inequalities, reinforce social biases, and conceal the human and environmental costs behind our digital lives. Rather than offering easy answers, the exhibition encourages us to sit with these contradictions, think critically, and preserve our capacity to imagine a (possibly) different future. 🌿

💜🌿A big thank-you, too, to everyone who joined us!💜🌿

Visit 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐤𝐨𝐬 𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐣𝐚 on Monday for the full story about our visit and Maria Dreer’s reflections on the exhibition! 🌿🍃💚

💚🌹We are truly humbled and deeply grateful that our wonderful guests travelled three hours and thirty minutes each way — a seven-hour round trip — to spend this special day with us. Your presence means more to us than words can express! 🌿🍃💚🌹

🌿 🌹🌿𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐠𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬! Thank you for your attentiveness, curiosity, kindness, and thoughtful contributions to the class activities. We will remember you in the very best light — and we mean it! ❤️

🌿 🌹🌿We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to their wonderful teachers and 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐮𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐧ė and 𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚 𝐏𝐞č𝐢𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧ė, for joining us; to the entire 𝐊𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐤𝐨𝐬 𝐍𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐬 𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐚𝐬 𝐊𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐤𝐚 𝐆𝐲𝐦𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦 community for its cooperation; and to the students’ families. Thank you for nurturing and supporting a generation of young people who are not only talented and curious, but also so kind and beautiful. 💚

🌿 🌹🌿A big thank-you to our volunteers, 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚 Š𝐢𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐯𝐲𝐭𝐲𝐭ė and 𝐀𝐫č𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐮š𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐬 (English Philology, Year 4), for their help and for introducing our guests to the Hall of the Nine Muses, the Writers’ Hall, the Repšys frescoes, and the underground labyrinths. We may have briefly lost track of a few students down there — but thankfully, we found everyone again! 😄 🌿

🌿 🌹🌿Our special thanks also go to 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 (English Philology, Year 4), who patiently documented the activities and is preparing a detailed story about our day. Keep an eye on 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐤𝐨𝐬 𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐣𝐚 and our 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 account — the story will be coming soon! 🌿 🌹🌿

𝐆𝐢𝐞𝐝𝐫ė 𝐁𝐚𝐥č𝐲𝐭𝐲𝐭ė for sharing such a deeply personal and moving family story about her mother, who, as a little orphaned girl, was taken in, nurtured, and raised by the Alkimavičius family, teachers at Vinco Kudirkos Gymnasium in Kudirkos Naumiestis. This remarkable story of kindness, compassion, and human generosity added a particularly touching dimension to our day, reminding us that the connections between schools, families, and academic communities can reach across generations. 🌿🌹💚

🌿🌹💚And a final, very special thank-you for the cake in the last photo — heaven on earth! It was so delicious that words simply cannot do it justice. Thank you! 🌿❤️🌹

❤️🌿𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐀𝐔Š𝐑𝐀 𝐊𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐊𝐀𝐈𝐓Ė! ❤️🌿

❤️🌿We are delighted to congratulate 𝐀𝐮š𝐫𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐤𝐚𝐢𝐭ė, a third-year English Philology student, on winning the 𝐀𝐥𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐭ė-𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐯𝐢č𝐢𝐞𝐧ė 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 with her translation of Lady Macbeth’s monologue from William Shakespeare’s Macbeth from English into Lithuanian.

❤️🌿 𝐑ū𝐭𝐚 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐢𝐭ė, Chair of the Jury, shares the jury’s assessment on behalf of its members:

“The students faced a serious challenge in translating Lady Macbeth’s monologue, while the jury faced the difficult task of selecting a winner from several distinctive and accomplished submissions. The winning translation takes a creative approach to the English text and, without losing the meaning of the original, speaks in natural, dramatically compelling Lithuanian. It successfully conveys the horror, cruelty, and pathos of the original, convincingly revealing the character’s emotional state and inner conflict.

The translation stands out for its vivid, poetic language, skillful use of epithets, and rich vocabulary. The rhythm falters a little at first, but gradually the translator finds her stride, as if taking on the moods and tone of Shakespeare’s character. Attention to rhythm, assonance, and alliteration gives the text a wonderful sound. An additional point is the beautiful rhymes, which, admittedly, belong more to the translator than to Shakespeare.

[..] we encourage her to continue pursuing literary translation, sharpen her pen, and nurture her talent!”

❤️🌿The scholarship diploma will be presented by the scholarship’s patron, 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐮𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐯𝐢č𝐢𝐮𝐬, at a Faculty Council meeting on 27 November.

💐 Congratulations, 𝐀𝐮š𝐫𝐚, on this wonderful achievement!

❤️🌿An interview with 𝐀𝐮š𝐫𝐚 is in the works - coming soon! ❤️
🌿

❤️🌿With Aušra’s permission, we are delighted to share her Lithuanian translation alongside Shakespeare’s original English text.
