Dr Julian Mamo delivered a talk titled "Valley dams as in-channel MAR in Mediterranean intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams: monitoring recession and recharge in Malta" at the 53rd World Groundwater Congress of the International Association of Hydrogeologists in Budapest, Hungary last month.

Small valley dams are used in dry valleys in Malta and around the Mediterranean to harvest rainwater runoff for agricultural use and to recharge our groundwater. In collaboration with the Energy & Water Agency (EWA), Dr Mamo is working on a monitoring programme to understand how fast these damns fill and how quickly they recharge the groundwater under different geological conditions.

🇲🇹🧬Professor Louis F Cassar from the University of Malta's Institute of Earth Systems recently paid a courtesy call on the High Commissioner of Malta, Professor Stephen Montefort. Professor Cassar was in London to attend the official welcoming ceremony at the Linnean Society.

Earlier this year, Professor Cassar was named a Fellow of the Linnean Society (FLS) of London. This highly regarded honour highlights his lifelong commitment to biological research and natural history, specifically celebrating his advancements in island biogeography and the conservation of biodiversity. Through an extensive academic footprint, Professor Cassar has furthered the understanding of species distribution across the Mediterranean region, notably the central Mediterranean area and the Maghreb. His impactful research relies on specific biological markers found within the orders Orthoptera and Lepidoptera.

Did you see us at the Maker Faire at Esplora?

Ms Julia Borg and Dr Julian Mamo represented the Institute of Earth Systems at the very first edition of this festival of invention, innovation, and curiosity in Malta.

They engaged with visitors, showing them how to give new life to old clothes and explaining how Malta's groundwater resources are managed.
