This week, Professor Keith Sciberras discussed current research and developments in Italian Seicento studies with Dr William Griswold, Director of The Cleveland Museum of Art, home to Caravaggio’s magnificent ‘Crucifixion of St Andrew’.
The visit also provided an opportunity to the Trustees of The Cleveland Museum of Art to view the exhibition of Italian Baroque paintings from the National Museum of Art (NAM) Collection at the Casino Maltese, celebrating the enduring significance of seventeenth-century Italian painting.
Pictured here is Dr Griswold during his visit to the exhibition, accompanied by Stefano Aluffi and Gordon Gullaimier, alongside the Casino Maltese Permanent Secretary, Dr Paul Borg Olivier.
This was welcome occasion for scholarly exchange and the strengthening of international cultural and institutional connections.

The Department congratulates artist and art historian Francesca Balzan, a graduate of the Department, who will be receiving the Gold Medal Award from the Malta Society of Arts in January 2027. Francesca has spearheaded the study of jewellery in Malta, and among many other roles, served as curator of Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum, Mdina (2007-2018). We are proud of you, Francesca!

Our third year students are already engaged in student-led, on-site research for their course on Late Baroque Art.

Today the Department organised a networking event for all its students during which they had the opportunity to get to know each other better over a light, informal moment. With gratitude to HoASA for their support and collaboration.

The University of Malta Gallery of Art (FUMAC) and Valletta Campus are pleased to contribute five important artworks to Gabriel Caruana: Public – Play – Private, an exhibition being held at the Victor Pasmore Gallery in Valletta.

This loan further strengthens the longstanding collaboration between FUMAC, the Department of Art and Art History, and Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti.

The collaboration will also extend to the forthcoming launch of the exhibition publication, which will take place at Valletta Campus, further consolidating the partnership between the participating institutions in the promotion and appreciation of Malta’s artistic heritage.

The exhibition is open until 23 January 2027.
