Mental Health at UM

Mental Health at UM Welcome to the official page of the Department of Mental Health of the University of Malta.

Welcome to the Department of Mental Health

The Faculty of Health Sciences and staff of the Department of Mental Health welcome you to explore the programmes of study currently offered in mental health care. This new department is multi-disciplinary, its staff representing psychiatric nursing, psychotherapy and biological sciences. Currently this department offers a variety of psychiatric nursing

courses, both on a part-time and full-time basis. Two courses are offered at undergraduate level and another two as Master programmes - one offered on a part-time basis and a second full-time dual International Masters programme in Community Psychiatric Nursing offered jointly with the University of Southern Indiana, USA. The department has a variety of Erasmus contracts with universities in the UK allowing for student mobility for three-month exchanges to and from these universities. It also has Erasmus teacher exchange programmes with universities in the UK and Belgium. The World Health Organisation estimates that one person in every four will experience mental health challenges during their lifetime with depression ranking as the second highest health problem worldwide. It is vital that we work to try to increase our knowledge and skills in dealing with mental health related illnesses as well as reducing the stigma associated with them. As the Department grows it intends to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in mental health specialities to all those working or interested in mental health care. If you are interested in a career that gives you both academic achievement and personal satisfaction and wish to make a difference, you are to consider a career in nursing. I invite you to explore the courses offered by the Department and should you be interested in furthering your studies in a specialist area of mental health, please contact us on +356 2340 1158 to make an appointment and discuss the possibility of joining us.

As part of the EU-funded EmpowerME project, a Capacity Building event was held to strengthen collaboration between educators and professionals involved in supporting children's development and well-being. Prof Michael Galea and Prof Josianne Scerri from the Department of Mental Health played an active role in the event, contributing their expertise to discussions and activities focused on enhancing children's mental health support. The sessions fostered collaboration and shared learning, while helping to develop practical tools and evidence-informed strategies that schools can implement to promote children's mental health and well-being.

Thank you today and everyday for the impeccable work and service.
