🎓 A Great Start to the Academic Year 2026–2027!
A warm thank you to all academic, administrative and technical staff who joined us for the Faculty of ICT’s Launch of the New Academic Year, today Wednesday, 14 October 2026.
The event featured:
🔹 A welcome introduction by Professor Ing. Carl J. Debono (Dean)
🔹 A presentation about Outreach Activities by Professor Vanessa Camilleri and Professor Christian Colombo.
🔹 A presentation by Professor Joel Azzopardi, Associate Professor at the Department of Artificial Intelligence entitled "Renting Intelligence: The Hidden Costs of AI and the Open-Weight Alternative"
🔹 🎖 The awarding of certificates to students who successfully completed the Certificate in ICT Foundation Studies
It was a meaningful moment to come together as a faculty to reflect on the last academic year, have a view on the work done by the Faculty, share experiences, and look ahead to another exciting year of learning, research, and innovation.

Our own Dr. Colin Layfield (Department of Information Systems) has appeared in an article on the Guardian news portal regarding groundbreaking discoveries on the Voynich Manuscript!

Dr. Layfield founded his Voynich Research Group in 2019 and this is the latest in a line of discoveries regarding the mysterious 15th century codex.

🚀 **48-Hour Digital Health Hackathon 2026**

Are you ready to help shape the future of healthcare?

Join us from **30 October to 1 November 2026** at **The Victoria Hotel, Sliema** for an intensive 48-hour Digital Health Hackathon focused on solving real-world healthcare challenges.

The event is organised by the **IEEE Malta Section** and **University of Malta Faculty of ICT, Department of Information Systems**, in collaboration with MDIA, supported by HLL Caremalta Frontiers, the SVP Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and health, bringing together students, healthcare professionals, technologists, researchers, entrepreneurs and innovators.

You do **not** need to have a technical background to participate. Multidisciplinary teams will work together with mentors and experts to develop practical solutions to real healthcare problems.

Challenge areas may include:

🤖 AI, humanoid robots and health data
🏥 Healthcare services and operational improvement
👵 Older adults and community care
📱 Digital tools, apps and platforms
💡 And other real-world digital health challenges

You can register with people you already know or register individually and allow the organisers to place you in a multidisciplinary team.

The Faculty of ICT participated in this year’s Science in the City event. Thank you to all those who joined us on Friday 25 September and braved the weather! The enthusiasm of the audience made the event a huge success. Visitors got hands-on with puzzles , tackled online computing tasks, were introduced to some of our research projects, explored our degree programmes and chatted with our staff.

From a thought-provoking panel, talks and breakout discussions, to hands-on Open Labs, the Final Year ICT Expo, and an exciting awards ceremony - the event was a showcase of Malta’s brightest digital minds and future tech leaders.
