StraighterLine was founded in 2009 by Burck Smith, founder and CEO. He wanted to offer online college courses at a fraction of the price of face-to-face classes.

By leveraging his 15 years of experience in higher education, drawing upon his relationships with policy makers and other industry personnel, Burck developed general education online college classes that are designed to help students complete classes faster at a much lower cost to earn a college degree.
