BACK-TO-BACK SUMMIT CUP CHAMPIONS 🤘🧡

This weekend, our mock trial team was named Summit Cup champions for the 2nd year in a row. Hosted by the University of Denver, the invite-only competition brings together the 12 law schools that won the most prestigious competitions the year before. Texas Law went undefeated through all five rounds of competition, taking down elite programs along the way.

None of this happens without our coaches Jay Ellwanger ’01, James Earl ’17, and Emily Ogden ’23, and an incredible team: Michael Blaine, Rand Meyer, Drew Ashlock, Josianne Alwardi, and Susmitha Ponnapalli. Texas Law mock trial is 2-0, and just getting started 🤘

BEST IN TEXAS…again 🤘

this weekend, Texas Law became the FIRST-EVER law school to win the TEX-ABOTA Best in Texas Voir Dire Competition TWICE!!

our team competed against all ten Texas law schools, with over 400 local citizens from Travis County volunteering as jurors.

congratulations to the entire team, and a special thanks to our coach, Brian Pounds!

Last spring, Micah McGill ’28 was gearing up for his first law school oral argument and needed to think like a lawyer, fast. So he called his 1L mentor, Nathan Vassar ’11. Vassar answered the call—even though he was on vacation.

That’s the kind of mentor Vassar has been for a decade in Texas Law’s Mentoring Program, which has made more than 3,500 matches since 2015.

McGill says it beat: “As a first-generation college graduate, I found that support from a mentor was essential, and he provided substantive guidance.”

Tonight, Vassar is being honored as Texas Law’s Mentor of the Year at the 2026 Alumni Awards. In his own words: “All of us who serve as mentors are proud and fortunate to play a small role in the development of future Texas Law graduates.”

Meet three of the newest members of the Texas Law Class of 2029: Ali Arwani, Karina Cavazos Gonzalez, and Luke Staffelbach.

These three new 1Ls have each earned a coveted, prestigious full-tuition scholarship awarded by the Justice Center, and the distinction of being named the school’s Public Interest Scholars for the Class of 2029.

Ali Arwani, our Equal Justice Scholar, comes to Texas Law after working in government and nonprofits supporting families facing displacement and insecurity, from the Texas House of Representatives to refugee services with Catholic Charities of Dallas.

Luke Staffelbach, a G. Rollie White Public Service Scholar, comes to Texas Law after serving as a caseworker with the Travis County Public Defender’s Office and working in refugee resettlement. He plans to focus on immigration law and direct representation.

Karina Cavazos Gonzalez, a G. Rollie White Public Service Scholar, traces her path to law school to growing up in the Rio Grande Valley. She plans to build a career in community-based advocacy.
