Last week, the Karch Gaming Institute hosted the 2026 Video Game and Esports Symposium!

Students spent the day learning about the history of video games and the industries that bridge the connection between storytelling, film, animation and Esports. Leading scholars from Norway shared their knowledge of academic Esports and the value it holds when developing real-world professional skills. Keynote speaker and founder of GameFrameworks, Fred White, spoke to his extensive experience growing and launching global game franchises while collaborating with major platform holders and publishers like SEGA, Microsoft Xbox, and PlayStation. Attendees even had the opportunity to explore student work during the Digital Game Industries minor exhibition at the end of the event.

Last week, ESPN Radio visited Professor Dalthorp’s sport communication classes, giving students an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to produce a national sports radio show. They also shared valuable advice on breaking into the sports communication industry and building a career in the field.

Senior Public Public Relations major Anna Buendia is spreading her love for music one jam session at a time. Buendia, along with her roommates, spend their Sunday's opening their rented home called "The Lodge" to the community for free music and food during their "Meet Me Here" tapings.

"It’s a biweekly block party. Anyone can come join, hop on the mic, on the drums, on the guitar, on the bass, eat, just sit there"

It was wonderful hearing from Ben James, Texas Advertising & Public Relations and Chief Creative Officer at Crispin, during the Advertising Portfolio 3 class last week!

With over 25 years of experience, Ben's extensive expertise in the creative field gave students the opportunity to understand how the skills they're learning in the classroom will translate to real-world applications. Students even got the opportunity to present some of their ideas to Ben, who provided valuable and insightful critique on their creative visions.

Jasmine Wu, an assistant professor of organizational communication and technology in Communication Studies-UT Austin, is continuing her research on communication in the workplace and the impact that digital technologies can have on organizations and employees alike.

After personally experiencing how COVID-19 impacted how people communicate, Wu became inspired to look into how to improve efficiency in organizations while also preventing employee burnout, especially those transitioning from remote to hybrid or in-person.

"It is important to follow the guidelines that your supervisors set for you, but it is also important to be aware of your own work preferences and how it makes you feel."

Students from across the University are getting the opportunity to build their analysis, communication, presentation and persuasion skills with the professional sales and business development minor (PSBD). The program, offered by Moody College of Communication and McCombs School of Business, The University of Texas at Austin, aims provide students with essential and foundational skills that will give them a head start in their professional careers.

“Every class that I’ve taken within the minor has given me practice for real-world situations, which I then used in both internships that I’ve had...Because it’s a joint program, you get opportunities from Moody College and McCombs that only students in our minor receive."

Texas Moody Texas Advertising & Public Relations class of 2018 alum Connor Wood is trading his cowboy boots for dancing shoes on this season of ABC's Dancing with the Stars!

Wood, also known as "Fibula" by his 1.5 million fans on social media, has been featured in The Hollywood Reporter's Creator A-List, was named a "Comic to Watch" by the New York Comedy festival and even headlined a sold-out show at the "Netflix is a Joke" festival!
