🔥 Blazing Hot Topics, Meaningful Conversations, and Valuable Connections! 🔥

Our Department of Communication Studies was proud to be represented at the UAB Honors College 4th Annual Blazing Hot Topics Networking Event!

We were especially proud to have one of our faculty members, Dr. Samantha J. Shebib, Ph.D., serve as a Hot Topics Facilitator, engaging with an incredible group of students through thoughtful discussions, fresh perspectives, and meaningful conversations. Events like these highlight the power of communication to bring people together, spark new ideas, and build lasting connections.

A special thank you to the UAB Honors College for hosting such a wonderful event and creating opportunities for students to connect, learn, and grow! 💚💛

Tell us you’re a Communication Studies major without telling us you’re a Communication Studies major. 👀💬

From analyzing everyday conversations to becoming the unofficial spokesperson for every group project, some things just come with the major. 😂🎤

Whether you’re a current student or a proud alum, we have a feeling a few of these will hit close to home! 💚💛

🏆💚💛 TWO NATIONAL AWARDS. ONE OUTSTANDING CHAPTER! 🎉

We have BIG news to celebrate! The PRCA/PRSSA at UAB chapter brought home TWO prestigious national awards from the annual PRSA conference in Orlando, Florida! 🌟

🏆 Dr. F. H. Teahan Award for Outstanding Chapter Firm — Recognizes the exceptional public relations campaigns our students developed and executed for real-world clients, demonstrating their creativity, professionalism, and career readiness! Students represented local nonprofit organizations Curt’s Closet, HARTT, Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School and Studio by the Tracks.

🏆 Dr. F. H. Teahan Award for Outstanding Chapter Newsletter — An incredible achievement made even more impressive because this was the chapter’s FIRST year producing a newsletter and competing in this category.

These national honors highlight the talent, dedication and hard work of these young professionals who are making a meaningful impact in their communities as they prepare to enter the workforce, career ready!

👏 Please join us in congratulating the PRCA/PRSSA at UAB chapter on these remarkable achievements! We couldn’t be prouder! 💚💛

🎙️ COMMUNICATION STUDIES: MYTH vs. REALITY

❌ MYTH: Communication Studies is just learning how to give speeches.

✅ REALITY: Public speaking is only one piece of what we study.

Communication Studies explores how people create meaning, build relationships, persuade audiences, navigate conflict, lead organizations, shape culture, and communicate across contexts.

From interpersonal and organizational communication to rhetoric, persuasion, leadership, and more, our students study something we all do every single day: communicate.

And learning to do it well? That’s a skill you can take just about anywhere. 🗣️💬
