UAB Department of Music

In March 2020, the UAB Concert Choir traveled to Mobile after being selected as one of the featured choirs for the Southern Region of the American Choral Directors Association Conference. Due to cancellations, some universities were not able to perform and were even told to not attend.

Fortunately, the UAB Concert Choir was still able to perform. They sang a program that Dr. Brian Kittredge, our Director of Choral Activities, had chosen on the theme of light. The concert unknowingly proclaimed hope at the beginning of what would be a long and terrible season in our national life.

We now share it with you as a sign of the power of music and of singing, and as testimony and witness to the amazing light who was Dolly Parton.

Congratulations to the UAB Concert Choir for being selected to perform at the 2027 AMEA Professional Development Conference!

The Alabama Music Educators Association (AMEA) Conference will be host to educators and students from across the state and is a great honor for which to be chosen to perform. The UAB Concert Choir, directed by Dr. Brian Kittredge, will represent the department of music on Friday, January 22nd at 9:30pm at the BJCC.

Summer Music Classes are in full bloom!

Consider enrolling for the UAB Department of Music summer 2026 classes. Courses include Fundamentals of music, Jazz Style: History and Appreciation, and Multiple versions of Music Appreciation. Many of the available courses meet the Blazer Core Creative Arts Requirement and have different scheduling in order to be accessible for all.

We invite you to the next performance by UAB Opera!

The UAB Opera, under direction of Lara Wilson and Patrick Evans, will be presenting a thrilling chamber opera entitled “Speed Dating Tonight” by Michael Ching. The performance will take place Friday, April 17th at 7:30 PM as well as Saturday, April 18th at 2:30 PM. Both showings will be in the blackbox space of the Odess Theatre.

Admission is $20 for general public, $15 for UAB Faculty and Staff, and Free for students with their ID.
