The Education Justice Project’s Spring 2026 interns, Farah Hasan and Mantej Ubhi, compiled a list of great documentaries and readings. They called it “Through Their Eyes” because it highlights the perspectives and experiences of people who have been incarcerated.

The EJP Friends & Family Picnic was a great way to start the Fall semester!

Thanks to everyone who attended, and the EJP's Advisory Council's special events committee, chaired by Greg Jahiel, for organizing. The EJP universe was on beautiful display over the weekend at our annual picnic. We plan to hold social and educational events throughout the year. All are welcome, as we continue to build and fortify the universe that makes EJP's successes possible.

The Education Justice Project and the Restorative Justice Initiative (RJI) at The Pennsylvania State University will be co-hosting a Reentry Simulation and Panel Discussion on Saturday, October 10 from 10am-12pm.

This interactive learning experience explores the systems, policies, and institutions that shape the reentry process following incarceration. Through a guided simulation and facilitated discussion, participants will examine how multiple systems including housing, employment, education, healthcare, transportation, supervision, and identification requirements—can intersect to create challenges during the first 90 days after release.

đź“Ł Mindfulness Discussion Group (MDG) is seeking new facilitators to join the team! đź“Ł

MDG focuses on mindfulness meditation and discussion of related texts. EJP offers an MDG Mindfulness Certificate, an MDG Facilitator Certificate, and teaching experience for EJP's Certificate for Education Studies through The University of Illinois in order to expand the reach of mindfulness meditation throughout DCC and beyond.

We ask facilitators to have and maintain a personal meditation practice in any tradition, secular or otherwise. Preferred experience would also include group facilitation experience and/or formal meditation training/experience.

EJP Policy and Research Director, Ashton Klekamp, joined IL legislative leaders earlier today to celebrate the University of Illinois’ success in expanding educational opportunity across Illinois, as exemplified by initiatives like EJP's college in prison programming and the policy work that Ashton's team does to expand access to higher education across Illinois’ prisons.

Ashton is joined in the photos below by State Senator Adriane Johnson and The University of Illinois System President Tim Killeen. We are grateful to them and other leaders at the event driving change in our state and nationwide.

Fall EJP classes at the prison started on Monday! đź“š

We are offering a blended course in which students from the Urbana Champaign campus will be co-enrolled in a creative writing course alongside EJP students, and a graduate course on research methods.

The course that was most popular among students who registered for this fall was an upper-division musicology course called “Blues and Folk” taught by long time EJP member Kelli McQueen.
