EJP is offering a reading group this summer that allows a group of returning EJP students to contribute to student success at Danville.

Led by instructor Shaelyn Smith, the Student Documents Committee will meet over the summer to discuss and design a comprehensive student handbook for both new and current EJP students. Participants will also develop a new student orientation curriculum to be deployed in August 2026 with the incoming student cohort.

Meet Stephanie Bernhard, an EJP intern with our Communications and Events Teams respectively this past semester! Stephanie is a rising senior majoring in Psychology. She was motivated to get involved with EJP after seeing us on quad day and because of a class she took in high school that discussed topics like “the ethics of permanent punishment and the benefits of higher education in prison.”

As a member of the Communications Team, Stephanie drafted and posted social media posts, collected monthly analytics, and photographed events. As an Events intern, she managed Zoom meetings and helped with setup and break down. She has learned a lot during her internship and says, “my favorite discovery was just how much support people on the inside have from those on the outside. I think that as long as EJP continues to educate people about the benefits of higher education in prison, that support will only continue to grow.”

In her free time, Stephanie can be found doing different crafts like scrapbooking, sewing, and making jewelry, pins, and keychains.

We are honored to share that “A New Path” was featured in a full-length Spanish article in the San Quentin News, a newspaper written by incarcerated individuals in California.

Written by Edwin E. Chavez for the January 2026 issue, the article highlights the difficult reality many incarcerated people face when foregoing parole out of fear of deportation, and lists several of the resources included in our guide.

This week, 9 EJP students will receive their Bachelor's degrees from Eastern Illinois University (EIU). 🎓

While EJP does not offer degrees, we provide students with (primarily) upper-division courses that can be applied to the EIU program (also at Danville) or other institutions upon release.

We are immensely proud of all EJP students who complete their undergraduate degrees through one of these channels.

We’re excited to announce that the 2026 edition of “Mapping Your Future, Illinois” is now available on IDOC tablets statewide as well as in Cook County and other jails!

We’ve also made our national edition of “Mapping Your Future” available on Edovo tablets, making them accessible in over 1,500 prisons and facilities all across the country!

For the first time, individuals incarcerated in prisons and jails can access this reentry resource directly from their tablets whenever they need it. In just the first 2 weeks, we’ve had nearly 7,000 incarcerated people access our resources, and we would greatly appreciate your help spreading the word to incarcerated individuals, families, advocates, and service providers across Illinois.

All our resources are available in both English and Spanish.

As always, our guides continue to evolve through collaboration and community feedback. We welcome input from legal professionals, service providers, advocates, and people directly impacted by incarceration.
