Department of Hispanic Studies at the College of Charleston

The College of Charleston’s Department of Hispanic Studies is one of the largest and most comprehensive undergraduate programs in the southeast at a university committed to preparing our students for the language demands of a world made increasingly smaller by technology, the global economy and immigration. Regardless of their career choices, our graduates find that proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese means increased opportunities, and in turn greater income-earning potential. Consequenty, Hispanic Studies enjoys approximately 150 Spanish majors and 300 minors (Spanish and Linguistics), numbers that have grown yearly.

Spring 2027 course highlight!

LTSP 252: Q***r, Black, and Nonhuman Narratives of Latin America

Instructor: Dr. Christina García

In this literature in translation course, we will study Latin American literary representations of q***r, trans* and black corporealities at the intersection of the nonhuman. Starting with the Argentine classic, Kiss of the Spider Woman (1976), and concluding with the Dominican Afro-Futurist novel Tentacles (2015), we will explore how Latin American writers unsettle the boundaries of the human as a way to contest dominant subject models. Rather than appeal to a universal humanism, Critical Race and Trans* theorists point to the concept’s origins in colonial projects and racial taxonomies.
Following their lead, we will trace how these literary tests foreground a shared enfleshment and artificiality, that which has often been deemed in excess to human essence and connects human bodies to animals, technology, and the divine.
In doing so, we will see how these writers disrupt social hierarchies and produce new forms of community based on difference, as opposed to a common identity.

SPAN 367: El mundo de Cervantes (Selected Readings in Spain)

Instructor: Profe Emily Beck

Cervantes is best remembered for his masterpiece Don Quijote, but what was the Spain of Cervantes really like and how did he shape literature and cultural productions worldwide?
SPAN 367 explores the literature, art, and culture of Early Modern Spain, as the country’s global reach led to the famous saying, “The sun never sets on the Spanish Empire.” This course introduces students to some of the most highly regarded works in literary and cultural traditions and considers the continuing relevance and impact of Miguel de Cervantes.

This course introduces students to Spanish language skills and cultural competencies relevant to healthcare professions. Through the study of medical terminology, patient-provider communication, and cultural perspectives on health, students develop the linguistic tools necessary to interact with Spanish-speaking patients in professional settings.

Join us for Obscure(d) Orders: The Threat and Promise of the Chaotic and Irrational in José Antonio Cotrina’s “Entre líneas”

Sabbatical Talk by Dr. Michael Gómez

This sabbatical talk focuses upon the work of contemporary Spanish author, José Antonio Cotrina-specifically, on his foundational short story, “Entre líneas” (2000).

In particular, the talk aims to reveal intersections between the ostensibly “fantastical’ occurrences within the Entre líneas alternate reality as represented in the titular short story and select concepts pertaining to Chaos Theory, mathematical irrationality & incommensurability, infinitesimals and the method of indivisibles (e.g., fractal structures, ‘ordered disorder’ in non-linear systems, numerical and other infinities within the finite, etc.), along with associated reactions, both fictional and historical, to said phenomena.
