A Halloween Dress Rehearsal at FSL Connect!

Halloween came a little early to Full Spectrum Learning on October 23, as students and staff gathered for a spirited dress rehearsal filled with costumes, games, laughter, and a few spooky surprises!

From creative costumes to shared laughs, the afternoon was a chance for everyone to relax, have fun, and enjoy being themselves. There was no pressure to dress up or join every activity. The important thing was having a place where everyone felt welcome, comfortable, and part of the celebration.

At Full Spectrum Learning, we know that inclusion isn't about expecting everyone to participate in the same way. It's about appreciating what makes each person unique and creating an environment where those differences are welcomed and celebrated. That's what autism acceptance looks like in everyday life.

A special thank you to the students and staff who brought their Halloween spirit and helped make the afternoon memorable. The costumes may have been a rehearsal for Halloween, but the friendships, laughter, and sense of belonging were the real thing.
At FSL, everyone brings something special to our community, and everyone deserves a place to shine.

This week, FSL is proud to recognize Zachary Schacht in our Peer Mentor Spotlight. Zachary represents an important milestone for our program as our first peer mentor who is also an FSL participant.
Zachary understands the value of having people around you who can offer support, encouragement, and understanding. As a peer mentor, he has the opportunity to connect with other students through shared experiences while contributing to a community where students can learn, grow, and work toward their goals.
Zachary is working toward finishing college with good grades and hopes to pursue a career in guidance counseling or human resources. His personal dream is to help people who may be struggling to help themselves, regardless of where his career ultimately takes him.
His story reflects why opportunities like peer mentoring matter. When students are given the chance to contribute, lead, and support one another, they become part of the work that makes a community stronger.
Congratulations, Zachary, on being this week's Peer Mentor Spotlight! We are proud to recognize you and the example you are setting within the FSL community.

On October 20, the FSL Community Relations welcomed Morgan Coleman as a new student assistant. As part of her introduction to the role, Morgan participated in her first tabling experience alongside Graduate Assistant Isaiah Jones.
During the training, Morgan learned about promoting Full Spectrum Learning, sharing information about the program, and helping others understand the resources and opportunities available to our students.
Outreach like this serves an important purpose. When we share the work FSL does, we help build awareness, strengthen connections, and open the door for more people to understand how they can support our students and their success.
We are glad to welcome Morgan to the team as she begins developing these skills and contributing to FSL's community outreach efforts. Every opportunity to share our mission is an opportunity to build stronger connections.
Welcome to the team, Morgan! We look forward to seeing you grow in this role.

Every great adventure starts somewhere.

Sometimes it starts with a roll of the dice.

A little imagination, some creative problem-solving, and a table full of people who have absolutely no idea what the Dungeon Master has planned for them.

Just another day of adventure at FSL CONNECT.

What's your favorite D&D character class?

A big thank-you to ARD Counseling Services and counselors Jansen Hudson and Tonya Wacker for the care, guidance, and support they provide to our students.
Having people who take the time to listen, offer encouragement, and help students work through challenges can make a real difference in their college experience. Their support helps our students feel heard, build confidence, and continue working toward their goals.
We appreciate the time and care Jansen, Tonya, and the ARD team put into supporting our students. The work they do is an important reminder that student success is not something students have to pursue alone. The right support and encouragement can help them move forward.
Thank you, ARD Counseling Services, Jansen Hudson, and Tonya Wacker, for being there for our students.

Creativity grows when students have the opportunity, resources, and support to turn their ideas into something real.
We want to thank Ms. Deanna Sherry from the Maker Space for the work she does to help our students explore their creativity through exciting 3D projects. Her support gives students the chance to work with their hands, explore new ideas, and see what they can accomplish.
Experiences like these matter. They encourage curiosity, build confidence, and remind students that their ideas have value. We appreciate Ms. Sherry for helping make these opportunities possible and for supporting our students as they learn and create.
Thank you, Ms. Sherry, for helping our students bring their ideas to life!

On October 2, 2026, FSL Connect was a great way to end the week as our students had the chance to Express Creativity and share some of the things that make them unique.
Students showed their talents in different ways, from drawing and dancing to sharing personal art projects they have created. It was a chance for students to put their interests and creativity on display while having their peers and FSL staff there to support them.
One of those students was Joseph Romeo, who shared his talent through dance. His performance was a great reminder that creativity does not look the same for everyone. Sometimes it is something you draw, something you make, or something you express through movement.
What matters is having a space where you can share it.
FSL Connect gives our students that opportunity to be themselves, recognize the talents of others, and celebrate what each person brings to the room.
Expression matters. Creativity matters. And every student has something worth sharing.

FSL Connect had another successful week in September 25th, and this time our students took part in an icebreaker called “Respect, Reactions and Reset.”
The activity focused on something we all deal with: how we respond when we are frustrated, disagree with someone, or find ourselves in a situation that does not go the way we expected.
Students were encouraged to think about the difference between reacting in the moment and choosing a response that shows respect. The discussion also emphasized that disagreement does not have to become disrespect, that taking responsibility can help repair a situation, and that sometimes the best response is knowing when to step away, take a moment, and come back with a clearer head.
These are practical skills that matter beyond FSL. Whether students are working with classmates, meeting new people, entering the workforce, or becoming more involved in their communities, knowing how to communicate clearly and handle difficult moments can make a difference.
The takeaway was simple: you may not be able to control every feeling, but you can control what you do with it. Respectful behavior helps create better interactions with the people around you.
FSL Connect continues to give our students opportunities to practice these skills in a space where they can learn from one another and grow.

Support should meet students where they are.

Full Spectrum Learning at Austin Peay State University provides support for degree-seeking students diagnosed with autism, with an emphasis on connection, access, participation, and individual growth.

Our Mobile Sensory Cart is one more way we can bring practical support into the spaces students already use. The cart includes sensory tools that can help students manage their environment, regulate, refocus, and find what works best for them throughout the day.

Students diagnosed with autism are not all the same, and support should not be one-size-fits-all. FSL works to create opportunities for students to identify useful strategies, access resources, build relationships, and participate more fully in campus life.

Sometimes support looks like a conversation. Sometimes it is a quieter space. Sometimes it is having the right tool available at the right time.

That is what Full Spectrum Learning is about: creating access, building community, and helping students find the resources that work for them.

Sometimes connection starts with a shared interest.

During CONNECT, students have regular opportunities to step away from classes, spend time with other students, and take part in activities they enjoy.

This week, that included Dungeons & Dragons and gaming. Familiar activities, a welcoming place to gather, and different ways to participate can make it easier for students to meet people, communicate, collaborate, and become part of the campus community.

The games are fun, but the relationships built around the table are what matter most.

Connect. Belong.
