The University of South Carolina Kay and C. Edward Floyd, M.D. School of Medicine was established with the purpose of improving the health of the people of South Carolina through medical education, research and the delivery of health care. We welcomed our first class of 24 medical students in 1977. During the past three decades, the Floyd School of Medicine has emerged as a national leader in primary care medicine. Noted for our high-quality medical education, we provide our students with one-on-one instruction that lasts throughout their medical studies. A distinguished faculty features more than 250 basic scientists and clinicians bringing a variety of academic and research training to medicine. PRISMA Health Hospital houses the School's clinical practices, which is the SC Midlands region’s largest multi-specialty health care group. From the Department of Neurology's clinically advanced stroke care to the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine's designation as South Carolina's first Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home, our clinical faculty are providing world-class care in many areas of medicine. The Floyd School of Medicine hosted the annual Run With All Your Heart 5K last weekend. Over 400 runners of all ages and abilities came out for a beautiful day and helped shine a light on the tremendous work being done by Prisma Health and the Curing Kids Cancer organization!

Dr. Meera Narasimhan, professor and chair in the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Kay and C. Edward Floyd, M.D. School of Medicine, received the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Henry McMaster on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at the South Carolina State House.

Congratulations to Meera Narasimhan, M.D., professor and chair in the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Floyd School of Medicine and Prisma Health Midlands, who was awarded the Order of the Palmetto today in a ceremony at the South Carolina State House. The award, South Carolina's highest honor, was presented by Governor Henry McMaster at an event attended by friends, family, and colleagues of Dr. Narasimhan. Congratulations! 🎉

Second-year medical student and 2025 SOAR participant Preston Harrison recently published a first-author article, highlighting his work in orthopedic research focused on reducing occupational radiation exposure among surgical staff.

"Under the mentorship of Dr. Tyler Gonzalez, I have contributed to efforts that prioritize both clinical excellence and provider well-being. This research reflects a commitment to protecting those who deliver care as much as those who receive it."
