The School of Information Science at the University of South Carolina

Cocky’s Reading Express gave out their 200,000th book this week! Let’s celebrate the young readers whose curiosity and enthusiasm give this work its meaning.

“200,000 is more than just books — it’s also a promise to read every single day,” says Cocky’s Reading Express Coordinator Margaret Cook Jackson. "When I think about this exciting milestone, I’m reminded that over 165,000 children have made this commitment to Cocky!”

Here’s to every student keeping that promise, every volunteer bringing a story to life and every person helping children build a love of reading that can last a lifetime.

Congratulations to Augusta Baker Endowed Chair Nicole A. Cooke and associate professor Rachel Willams on being awarded the IMLS National Leadership Grant! This is a 2-year grant for their project entitled, "Enhancing Professional Development for Library Professionals Through Storytelling." The grant will provide $297,537 in funding.

The Radical Empathy and Leadership Lab is exploring how storytelling, reflective practice and community-building activities can help public library professionals strengthen empathy and better serve patrons. Through story circles, journaling and surveys, the project examines how these approaches can foster more compassionate and supportive interactions, especially for community members facing personal challenges.

Don't miss this weekend's screening of “Mark: A Call to Action,“ a compelling documentary chronicling the life and advocacy of Mark Bookman, Ph.D.

The screening will be held Sunday, July 26, at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Richland Library Main, located at 1431 Assembly Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201. Admission is free and open to the public. This screening is a collaboration between our Accessibility Leadership Lab and Richland Library. It celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
