At Mizzou Engineering, we’re building a solid foundation on which the next generation of technology-enabled problem-solvers will reimagine the future.

Engineering faculty are integrating AI into the classroom while preserving the Missouri Method fundamentals that make Mizzou graduates so effective in the workplace and laboratory.

“We need to think carefully and creatively about how to bring in the AI element in targeted, hands-on ways that supports student learning outcomes,” he said.

Mizzou is moving Missourians quickly into high‑skill, high‑demand, high‑wage construction careers while also creating new, flexible entry points into higher education — at no cost to the learner.

The Missouri Construction Pathways Initiative (McPIe) features 11 new short‑term training programs focused on in-demand occupations such as construction project leadership, safety and risk management, digital construction and estimating, surveying, and heavy equipment operations.

“These programs are about moving people quickly into high‑demand workforce areas,” said Praveen Edara, principal investigator for the initiative. “They’re also about helping people already in the field gain the skills they need to move ahead.”

By connecting Missourians to opportunity and employers to talent, the no-cost initiative is helping build not just roads and bridges, but the future of the state’s workforce.

Earlier this year, juniors Diego Ochoa and Ashlyn Ohlms won the Entrepreneurship Alliance pitch competition, an initiative of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business.

The pair’s idea — a device that quantifies hamstring injury and recovery — ultimately won the competition, but the program forced them to confront questions outside engineering.

“Our mentors would sometimes tell us, ‘This idea probably won’t work,’ and then explain why,” Ochoa said.

Civil engineering students Nick La Chance, Korey Long, Macie McPheeters, Clare Tyson and Emily Van Dover planned how to renovate a medical science building so it could support modern research, while emphasizing safety, cost and timeline.

The team learned how tightly estimating, scheduling, safety and logistics are linked and how a change in one area can ripple through the others.

The project reinforced practical skills in quantity takeoff, cost modeling and schedule development and emphasized higher‑level planning like phasing, risk mitigation and coordination in an occupied facility.

Congratulations to the Torq’N Tigers | Mizzou Quarter Scale Tractor Pulling Team on their powerful performance at the 2026 ASABE International Quarter Scale Tractor Student Design Competition!

The Torq’n Tigers A-Team’ tractor, the Spirit of Columbia, took first place in performance, first in the 1,100-pound low-hook pull, first in durability and fifth overall among 23 teams.

Mechanical engineering students Andrew Kabrick, Trevor Blanken, Jacob Lakenburger, Ben Higgins, Noah McMullen and Jack Knop leveraged their classroom knowledge and problem-solving skills acquired in club activities to design a practical tool for homeowners.

The elevator can easily move large quantities of firewood and other heavy loads from ground level to deck height safely and easily.

The project reinforced the importance of rigorous analysis, standards compliance and iterative design while allowing them to create a product with tangible real-world value.
