What does it mean to be a nation of immigrants?

On October 22, Knox College's Phi Beta Kappa chapter will welcome Stanford University professor Tomás R. Jiménez for a public lecture titled "Are We Still a Nation of Immigrants?"

Jiménez, whose research focuses on immigration, assimilation, social mobility, and identity, will explore how America's understanding of itself as a nation of immigrants developed and whether that narrative remains relevant today.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

October 22 at 4:00 PM
Abolition Lab, Seymour Library

On this Indigenous Peoples' Day, we want to reflect on the visit from Illinois Poet Laureate Mark Turcotte, who is a Turtle Mountain Ojibwe poet and visited with our Knox community on Friday.

"As a Native person in America, I have an obligation to be sort of the peoples' poet. An advocate for poetry, an ambassador for poetry. But I also have an obligation to who I am. I am the first Native laureate in the state," Mark said.

Mark has written multiple books of poetry, including Exploding Chippewas and The Feathered Heart. Here is a short excerpt from one of the poems he read:

"Who first stood here? Whose voice first sounded upon this land? Whose voice first rose and rang out of this earth, shaping this earth where this nation now stands? Whose voice chanted and sang into being, made sacred the foundations of where this city, this very room, now stands?"

We thank Mark Turcotte for visiting Knox on Friday, and sharing some of his amazing work with us!
