Today, our 50 Alumni, 50 States journey takes us to Georgia, where we're catching up with Sandburg alumna Saige Alexander '15. As a participant of the George Washington Gale Scholars Program, Saige completed her bachelor's degree at Knox College and has built a successful career as a paralegal and office manager in the Corporate Law Department at State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. Sandburg recently dedicated a tree on its Carthage campus in memory of an alumnus and fallen first responder. A purple prince flowering crabapple tree was planted in honor of Doug Buckert, a volunteer member of the Carthage Fire Department who was killed in the line of duty while responding to a call near Burnside on Oct. 2, 1997. Buckert graduated from Sandburg in 1995 with an associate degree, and he earned another degree from Sandburg in 1997 as part of the college's first mortuary science program graduating class. Doug's parents and his sister were present for the tree dedication ceremony. The Buckert family also continues to honor Doug's memory through a Sandburg Foundation scholarship in his name.

We're catching up with Sandburg alumnus Tanner Owen '18! After earning his associate in arts degree at Sandburg, Tanner transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to continue his education. Today, he works as a consultant in the automotive industry with Ethos Group and resides in Massachusetts. We're excited to celebrate Tanner's success and the positive impact he's making. Stacey Rucker, assistant manager of alumni engagement & advancement communications, attended the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Annual Conference in California earlier this month. Nearly 500 professionals gathered to explore emerging trends and best practices in fundraising, alumni relations, and advancement marketing/communications. We're grateful to CASE for providing valuable professional development opportunities that assist employees within the advancement profession.

We'll open the time capsule sealed 50 years ago and explore artifacts that offer a glimpse into campus life in 1976. All members of the Sandburg community are invited to attend.
