Sandburg is closed today, Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. Via History.com, Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. Juneteenth has been a federal holiday since 2021.

Lombard students and their families joined us on campus to celebrate their 2025-2026 Sandburg students of the month, completing our week of recognizing the stellar students in our district. THANK YOU for the opportunity to honor your fantastic students and the great things they have done this past year, being true representatives of the core values excellence, collaboration, integrity and respect. THANK YOU to all our King Elementary families for coming out to Sandburg to recognize their amazing students who were Student of the Month during the 2025-2026 academic year. These students have gone above and beyond for their classmates, their school and themselves and we could not be more proud to celebrate them tonight.
