What happens when you give students the chance to spend a day in the shoes of an orthopedic surgeon? 🦴💪

The Perry Initiative brought 25 local high schoolers together with a few of our orthopedic surgeons, providers, residents, and researchers for a day of hands-on learning. The students got to try their hand at suturing, casting, and arthroscopy as they explored careers in orthopedic surgery.

A promising step forward in ovarian cancer research! 🧬🔬

University of Iowa researchers developed a new treatment that has received FDA clearance to advance to clinical trials. The treatment aims to convert immune cells that support ovarian cancer tumors into immune cells that kill them.

Contributors from UI Health Care and the UI Carver College of Medicine include physician-scientists George Weiner, MD, Annette Schlueter, MD, and Michael Goodheart, MD, research scientist Jyoti Arora, associate research scientist Melissa Fath, and Laura Dallas, Regulatory Affairs Specialist for Investigational Drugs and Devices at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

From the remote Himalayas to outer space. 🚀

Simran Sarin, a fourth-year student at the Carver College of Medicine, is one of just 20 students nationwide selected for NASA’s Aerospace Medicine Clerkship. She’s learning how medicine is delivered in space and working with a student team to design a space-based research project.

Her path to NASA began in Iowa ophthalmology labs, where she’s studied how spaceflight affects vision, research that could help protect astronauts on future missions to Mars.

“Challenging yourself to think through these scenarios allows you to become more creative and apply fundamental questions to patient care,” Simran says. “It helps you to be the best possible advocate for your patients.”

From a farm in Winterset to the halls of the Carver College of Medicine, Bailey VandeLune’s journey to medicine was shaped by loss, perseverance, and a passion for caring for rural Iowans.

Now beginning her emergency medicine residency at University of Iowa Health Care, Bailey is continuing that commitment to service and her family’s legacy. 💛

For Gavin Godwin, cancer research is more than a scientific interest. It’s personal. 🔬

The first-year biomedical science graduate student from Des Moines, Iowa, discovered his passion for research while studying biochemistry at Wartburg College, where he helped investigate potential treatments for pancreatic cancer.

With three family members lost to pancreatic cancer and others affected by the disease, Gavin is motivated to find answers that could make a difference for families like his.

“Getting answers about cancer is not only important to me as a scientist and someone who wants to help people, but also as an Iowan who cares about the community that I grew up in,” Gavin says.
