Maternal Health

“I’m interested in research because I want to gain a deeper understanding of the nursing field. I’m very interested in maternal health, and I believe this is a great way to learn more!”

Stigma surrounding nursing students caring for patients with substance use disorder (SUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD).  Independent research on the lack of mental health resources in Division I athletics.

“I really enjoyed our nursing research class and have wanted to conduct my own independent research on mental health, a topic I’ve encountered throughout my studies as both a nursing and psychology major. I thought the Undergraduate Research Fellows Program would be a great place to start!”

I’ve always been interested in pediatric nursing, so learning about children with medical complexities and their families while contributing to meaningful research has been very fulfilling.”

Meet our new faculty member, Nicholas Raposo, PhD, MPH, RNC-OB!

Dr. Raposo began teaching at URI last spring on the clinical track as a clinical instructor and teaching assistant before transitioning to the tenure track this fall. He will be teaching NUR 208: Growth, Development, and Health Promotion.

As an educator, he hopes students learn to see each patient as a whole person and consider the broader contexts of care. 🩺💙

Our senior nursing students spent the day at Cyde Tower Tenants Community Garden taking residents blood pressure and glucose levels! They had a great time connecting with residents and giving back to the community. 🩺✨

Congratulations to URI College of Nursing Professor Diane DiTomasso, PhD, RN, IBCLC, FAWHONN, on her induction as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing!

Her impactful research in human lactation and maternal-child health continues to advance evidence-based care for women, infants, and families. With more than 80% of URI’s tenured nursing faculty earning this prestigious recognition, we are proud to celebrate the excellence and impact of our faculty! 💙

We’re proud to highlight Kenneth A. Lynch, Jr., PhD, APRN-CNP, an Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of Surgical Education at Brown University, as well as a Nurse Practitioner in Trauma and Critical Care.

A proud URI College of Nursing FNP graduate (’06), Dr. Lynch has built an impressive career combining clinical practice, education, mentorship, and research. In his role as Director of Surgical Education, he leads educational programming and resident training while mentoring future surgeons. His clinical practice focuses on caring for acutely ill and injured surgical patients.

His work also focuses on simulation-based training, competency assessment, and culturally responsive surgical care. Most recently, he was honored with the 2026 Brown University Health Advanced Practice Provider Excellence in Precepting and Mentoring Award.

We’re proud to celebrate Dr. Lynch and the impact he continues to make in nursing, surgical education, and patient care. 💙
