University of Tennessee Facilities Services

Our Department is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Main and Agricultural campuses of the University of Tennessee. We currently maintain approximately 230 buildings, containing almost 14,800,000 gross square feet of space; 556 acres; 5 miles of University-owned streets and 7 1/2 miles of City-owned streets within the campus boundaries; 33 miles of sidewalks and plazas; a University-owned electrical distribution system which annually provides over 225 megawatt hours of power to University buildings; and a University-owned Central Steam Plant with one natural gas and three coal fired boilers with a distribution system which annually produces over one-half billion pounds of steam for heating purposes.

PAWSITIVE POST ALERT!

Earlier in October, Facilities Services staff were treated to plenty of tail wags and a little stress relief in the form of four-legged friends. We're grateful for their visit and the reminder to take a moment to pause, recharge, and enjoy the little things.

Traffic Alert Notice from TDOT:

Motorist traveling on Neyland Drive (State Route1) in Knox County should be aware of upcoming road construction activities that will have an impact on traffic.

Beginning at approximately 4AM on Saturday, October 24th, Neyland Drive will closed between Jacob Drive and Joan Cronan Way as crews remove and replace the existing railroad crossing in this area.

Detour signage will be in place to direct motorist to roads on the UT campus to bypass the work zone. Motorist can also use I-40 and Alcoa Highway (US129/SR115) as alternate routes. This work is expected to be completed by 11:59PM on Sunday, October 25th.

Motorist should use extreme caution in this area as crews will be present.

When the unexpected happens, the Facilities Services team steps up. 🧡

After flooding at the UT Conference Center displaced offices, classrooms, and meeting spaces, a dream team from Design Services jumped into action. Ed, Grace, Barbara, Maria, Alex, and David (pictured left to right) worked hard to assess needs, identify available spaces, and coordinate transitions that helped displaced campus partners get back up and running on a tight timeline.

It took collaboration, creativity, and a whole lot of behind-the-scenes work to make it happen. We’re grateful for this team’s dedication and the many ways they help keep campus moving forward. That’s what it means to be part of Facilities Services! 🍊

Chiller maintenance is all in a day’s work! 🔧🧡 Tiny Hicks was on the job at Mossman over the weekend, making sure the equipment behind the scenes gets the attention it needs. Campus doesn’t keep running itself, and our Facilities Services team is always on the job!

Making every task shine! 🧡 Our Building Services team brings energy, teamwork and pride to every space they care for, including our Early Learning Centers. When flooding at the Conference Center displaced university departments, our Facilities Services team stepped up to help create new spaces for teaching and learning at Cherokee Mills.

As part of a larger renovation effort, our crews renovated six areas throughout the building. The largest of those spaces is this new classroom for the Audiology program, providing faculty and students with a fresh place to teach, learn and move forward.

We’re proud of the Facilities Services teammates whose hard work and craftsmanship are helping the university community get back to what matters most. Great work, team!

Some landmarks tell a story. Our crews help bring that story to life. 🧡

As the statues of Jim Haslam, Doug Dickey and Phil Fulmer have recently taken their places around campus, there’s a team behind the scenes tasked with making sure they stand tall. Our Heavy Equipment and In-House Construction crews are the hands-on experts responsible for setting these landmarks in place, helping shape the spaces where generations of Vols will learn, lead and make memories.

From the buildings we maintain to the landmarks we help create, Facilities Services plays a vital role in shaping the identity of the University of Tennessee. Our teammates don’t just care for this campus. They help build the places, traditions and experiences that make it unmistakably Tennessee.

We’re proud of the skill, craftsmanship and Big Orange pride our crews bring to work every day. The next time you pass one of these statues, remember the Vols behind the scenes who helped make it possible.
