Last month, students took their reporting global through UT School of Journalism and Media's “Going on Assignment” study abroad program, learning what it means to be a journalist by doing the work in real time in Prague.

Through hands-on “street-beat” reporting, in-field experiences, and classes with industry professionals, students built multimedia stories and produced publishable work to elevate their portfolios for future internships and careers, all while exploring the beautiful city and gaining a global perspective.

The countdown is officially on... Less than two weeks before we welcome you back home to CCI 🧡

This summer, recent Tombras School of Advertising & Public Relations grads (and sisters!) Victoria and Vanessa took their skills straight from the classroom to Bonnaroo, working on the festival’s social media team and gaining hands-on experience in one of the most fast-paced environments in the industry.

From creating TikToks and interviewing festivalgoers to capturing the energy of live performances, they built real-world skills in content creation, trend-spotting, and storytelling, all while stepping outside their comfort zones. We’re proud to see our grads building their paths in so many different ways!

Through adjunct lecturer and alum Isaac Fowler’s Video Sports Production and Performance class, students were given the opportunity of a lifetime to work on a documentary about Tennessee Basketball Head Coach Rick Barnes. The documentary offers a never-before-seen look at the places and people that shaped him—from his hometown roots in Hickory, North Carolina, to key family relationships and pivotal turns in his coaching career.

Produced by Land Grant Films and the UT School of Journalism and Media and presented by UTK Media Center in association with Tennessee Athletics, the documentary is a window into the power of collaboration at UT to expand opportunities for students and prepare them for careers in sports media and documentary filmmaking.

It’s Not About Me: A Rick Barnes Story premieres this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on Tennessee Athletics YouTube channel.

Produced by 11 UT students, under the direction of professor Isaac Fowler, the project chronicles Rick Barnes' ascent from his childhood in Hickory, N.C., to his present status as Vols head coach.

It is the first public video to feature interviews with Barnes, his wife (Candy) and both his children (Nick and Carley).

Some students recently spent part of their summer in Ireland with UTK Communication Studies, exploring intercultural and health communication while experiencing Irish culture firsthand and learning how communication shapes connection, care, and community across the globe.

Outside the classroom, Ireland became their learning environment through visits around the city, to historical sites and Northern Ireland, and more.

Each of these experiences adds to a bigger story: preparing students to think globally, communicate across cultures, and lead with perspective wherever they go. ✈️
