Frank Batten College of Engineering & Technology ODU’s undergraduate enrollment includes 27% of students who self‐reported as African American or Black (Fall 2015).

At the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology at ODU, students create, compete and participate in cutting-edge research and design projects, all while earning a great engineering education and having a fulfilling college experience. The Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University (ODU) promotes the advancement of engineering knowledge, both in creation and dissemination, by providing learning environments with proven pedagogical practices. By maintaining high ethical, multicultural, and global standards, BCET programs have received accreditation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Additionally, the National Science Foundation (NSF) ranked BCET 88 out of 460 in the nation for federal research and development expenditures and 97th for the total research and development expenditures. ODU is a “minority serving institution” (MSI), a postsecondary institution with an enrollment that includes at least 25% of a specific minority group (e.g., Asian, African American, Hispanic, Native American). In fact, ODU has the highest percentage of African American students enrolled in a Virginia institution that is not a historically black college (HBCU). BCET consists of 6 Departments encompassing a wide array of engineering disciplines, including: Mechanical and Aerospace; Engineering Management and Systems Engineering; Engineering Technology; Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Civil and Environmental Engineering. Across these programs, the Batten College of Engineering and Technology is delivers cutting edge research in areas of interest to the Department of Defense (DoD) including, but not limited to, autonomous marine vessels, modeling and simulation, mechanical engineering, cyber security and cyber support, reliability and maintainability engineering, test and evaluation, and high level systems design and integration. Strategically located in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, ODU is uniquely positioned to achieve these aims. Home to one of the world’s largest military populations, the Hampton Roads population of 1.6 million includes approximately 150,000 DoD residents, (including 83,000 active duty military personnel). Every branch of the military is represented in the area with one or more major command centers. Hampton Roads is also home to the largest Naval base in the world. In fact, more than 20% of the entire US Navy is located in the Hampton Roads area and within a 30-minute commute to ODU. The regional economy has become increasingly dependent upon defense spending over the past decade, with DoD spending accounting for 45.6% of all regional economic activity. ODU maintains close partnerships with the US Navy (and all other branches of the military), the maritime, shipbuilding and repair industries. Many of their representatives serve on ODU’s institutional advisory boards.

𝗢𝗹𝗲𝗸𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿 𝗞𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗼, 𝗣𝗵.𝗗., associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Old Dominion University, has received a $400,000 National Science Foundation award to develop a process that makes 3D-printed composite parts stronger and more reliable.

The three-year project builds on a patented process that uses heat and pressure to strengthen printed parts without traditional molds. The technology could help manufacturers produce lighter, stronger components for aerospace, automotive and defense applications.

𝗢𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼 𝗔𝘆𝗮𝗹𝗮, 𝗣𝗵.𝗗. has been selected as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a distinction held by fewer than 5% of the organization’s members.

ASME Fellows are recognized for significant engineering achievements and sustained contributions to the profession.

“Being elected an ASME Fellow is a tremendous honor,” he said. “It is one of the highest distinctions in the engineering profession, recognizing, through a peer-review process, my longstanding contributions to engineering research, education, and professional service.”

Dr. Ayala is a professor of mechanical engineering technology and the Ray Ferrari Endowed Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology.

He also serves as the inaugural director of ODU’s Office of Undergraduate Research, where he leads university-wide initiatives to expand undergraduate participation in research and creative activities. He is particularly interested in experiential learning, undergraduate research and preparing the next generation of engineers and scholars.

Dr. Ayala earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Delaware. His research focuses on fluid mechanics, multiphase flows, heat transfer, and computational modeling.

He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal publications and has over 25 years of experience in academic research, engineering education and industry.

His contributions to ASME include international representation, committee leadership, and participation in codes and standards activities. He has also held leadership and service roles in the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Congratulations to Jeshua Stam, an Old Dominion University senior majoring in electrical engineering, on receiving an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Society (PES) Scholarship!

The scholarship supports undergraduates pursuing careers in power and energy engineering through funding, mentorship and hands-on experience. Stam is one of 41 recipients in Region 3, which spans the southeastern United States. He is also one of only four students from Virginia universities to receive the award.

Stam has gained experience both on and off campus. He has worked as a station engineering intern at American Electric Power, a summer intern with the Virginia Microelectronics Consortium (VMEC) and a marketing specialist at ODU.

He also held leadership roles as historian for ODU’s Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society, vice president of the ODU IEEE Student Branch, a fellow and scholar with the CIVIC Leadership Institute, and a student leader with ODU Cru.

Congratulations to Andrew Lander, an undergraduate research assistant working with Dr. Michele Audette, on receiving the Best Presentation Award at the 2026 Medical World Models Workshop, held in conjunction with the Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) conference in Strasbourg, France.

Lander, a computer science major with a minor in biomedical engineering, contributed research on spatiotemporal anatomy transfer methods that could advance virtual reality training for labor and delivery. This work could give medical professionals new ways to practice responding to complex birth scenarios.

“It's already rare for an undergraduate researcher to produce a paper that is MICCAI-worthy, workshop or main conference, let alone one that garners a prize such as this one,” Dr. Audette said. “This is important work, especially given the need for better labor and delivery outcomes in the US, where a VR-based L&D simulator could lead to a massive improvement.”
