The Department of Physics’ recent colloquium featured Dr. Cynthia Keppel, who shared how discoveries in nuclear physics are helping advance cancer detection and treatment.

From proton therapy to breast cancer imaging, she walked students and faculty through the process of turning research ideas into medical technologies that can make a difference in patients’ lives.

She also shared her journey, highlighting the collaboration, persistence and innovation it takes to bring scientific discoveries from the lab to real-world applications.

Thank you, Dr. Keppel, for sharing your experiences and showing our Monarch science community how research can make an impact beyond the lab.

Quantum Week 2026 is underway!

From hands-on workshops and research demonstrations to career exploration, planetarium shows and a quantum hackathon, there's something for everyone curious about the possibilities of quantum science and technology.

Hosted by ODU's Quantum Student Association, the weeklong celebration runs October 18–24 and welcomes students of all majors and skill levels.

Science comes to life when you can experience it firsthand.

This Saturday, Oct. 3, the Physics Department will join the Virginia Children’s Festival at Town Point Park, where faculty and students will lead physics demonstrations for young learners and their families.

Community outreach experiences like this give our faculty and students an opportunity to share their enthusiasm for science while encouraging curiosity in the next generation of scientists.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Downtown Norfolk.

Last week, ODU Ocean & Earth Sciences Chair Kevin Yeager joined colleagues from across the country in Washington, D.C., for the Research and Education Coalition for Ocean Sciences (RECOS) annual meeting and Hill visits.

RECOS members include academic institutions, nonprofits, aquariums and marine research organizations dedicated to advancing ocean science, technology and education.

The group met with federal agency representatives and congressional offices to discuss federal support for ocean and coastal research, including funding for NOAA, NSF and Navy science.

We’re proud to see OES represented in conversations helping shape the future of ocean science and research.
