Dr. Ashley Mattison and her students are making strides to bring the importance of STEM education to rural areas through our department and our department is very proud of these extension accomplishments! Here are some pictures of her students (Ph.D. student Lou Vanhauwaert and undergraduate Sadie LaRue) in action at the Rural Renewal Conference. This is a new era for BMB to build impact via the implementation of extension programs!

Hanging out with Larkin and Charles and feeding them at the Gustafson house - they were preparing their display for homecoming! Always a great feeling to hang out with such student leaders - these two are going places and Charles is med school bound already! So proud of them!

Hanging out with the best students that I know - the DNA or Biochemistry Club members - painting their homecoming display. They were really smart, brought a projector to initially sketch their design and enjoyed chili and chicken stew. Get to do this again with the Students of Rural Osteopathic Medicine (StORM) club this coming Saturday! Sofia and I will make them homemade pizza!

Dr. G., along with graduate students Layne Havlik and Andres Brun Velasquez (not pictured because Dr. G. forgot to take photos!), had a great time at the State Fair teaching children and their parents that DNA is found in all foods.

The kids especially enjoyed the hands-on activities, which allowed them to participate directly in the learning experience. By the end, they all felt like scientists!

We also had the pleasure of reconnecting with a BMB alum Amber Anderson, who served as Miss American Indian OSU during her time here (older picture, Dr. G. is thinner....). It was wonderful to see how she has gone on to achieve great success and build a wonderful family.

Thank you so much for meeting with me today! I really enjoyed our conversation and getting to hear more about your research and the work you do.

It’s one thing to read about someone’s research, but getting to hear about it directly from the person who conducted it makes it feel so much more meaningful. I especially enjoyed hearing you talk about your work and learning more about what goes on behind the research.

I’m really excited to be joining your lab and to have the chance to gain hands-on research experience. Thank you again for taking the time to meet with me and for welcoming me into your lab. I’m looking forward to getting started!
