Two world-class institutions. One bold vision for the future of engineering. 🌎

Grainger Engineering and IIT Bombay launched a multi-year, cohort-based program that will bring students from both institutions together to collaborate across continents and address complex, real-world engineering challenges.

Students will earn their undergraduate degree from their home institution and a Joint Credential Certificate upon completing the program. Through cross-continents collaboration, students will gain experience in ethnographic entrepreneurship, market innovation-focused strategy and global problem-solving.

Innovation and entrepreneurship are central to the partnership, connecting Landuyt Center for Entrepreneurship and Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship, IIT Bombay.

Incoming first-year students can apply during their first semester. Applications are due September 15, and scholarships will be available to selected students. Current Illinois students can explore the partnership through a short-term faculty-led program and other upcoming opportunities.

There are eight National Science Foundation (NSF) Quantum Leap Challenge Institutes across the nation, and The Grainger College of Engineering is proud to be home to one of them.

NSF Hybrid Quantum Architectures and Networks has been renewed for another five years with $37.5M in funding. With 45 senior researchers from six institutions, NSF HQAN will continue its mission in studying modular approaches to quantum computing, as well as serve as a nexus between scientists, federal science agencies, quantum technology companies and educational organizations.

"The first phase of HQAN has made substantial progress in terms of both research advances and building the quantum workforce of the future. We have set the stage for modular quantum computing, which was largely unexplored when we started but now appears on the quantum roadmaps of major companies. I am also proud that we are a regional center anchored in the Midwest, where we have been a key partner of the Chicago Quantum Exchange and driven new initiates such as the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park,” said Brian DeMarco, NSF HQAN Director and Illinois Grainger Engineering Professor.

As it enters this second phase, NSF HQAN is working toward a comprehensive, industry-ready pathway to modular quantum computing, one that brings hardware and software together to realize real quantum advantage.
