The Department of Social Work in collaboration with Lead Change and Philasonke organisations is pleased to invite the Wits Alumni to the 2026 Disability Indaba, which will take place on 29 September 2026 at the Flower Hall, Wits University.

The theme of this year’s Indaba is “Beyond Qualifications: Unlocking Potential and Advancing Inclusion’’, with a particular focus on the employability and inclusion of persons with disabilities. The event will bring together students, graduates, persons with disabilities, academics, government representatives, industry stakeholders, and organisations working in the disability sector.

We believe that the participation of Wits alumni would add significant value to the discussions and create opportunities for meaningful engagement, networking, mentorship, and collaboration.

Nelson Mandela’s Wits story is part of a much larger South African story, one of courage, learning and the pursuit of justice.

As Wits’ first Black law student, Nelson Mandela entered spaces that were not built to include him. Yet his life’s work became a call to build a more inclusive, united and compassionate society.

His legacy reminds us that true leadership is not only about standing firm but about bringing people together.

As we commemorate Mandela Day, we honour Madiba’s humanity, his commitment to unity, and his belief in a future shaped by dignity, courage and hope. May his example inspire each of us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, not only today, but every day.

How Dreams are realised: From Sebokeng to the world stage💙

When Witsie Perlman founded the Dreamfields Project ( ) in 2015 and launched its DreamLeague at Setlabotjha Primary School in Sebokeng. Among one of the 146 learners taking part was Thapelo Maseko.

Fast forward to today – Maseko has written his name into history, scoring the decisive goal that sent South Africa into the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

As highlighted in Wits Review (April 2024), this vision aligns closely with the spirit of using collective effort, partnership, and purpose-driven action to create lasting change in communities.

Perlman adds that credit belongs not only to Dreamfields, but also to Maseko’s family, coaches and the Sebokeng community, whose support helped shape his journey

Thank you to everyone who joined our recent Wits Alumni webinar with futurist and author Dr Craig Wing. Through his Four Future Seasons framework, Dr Wing challenged us to think differently about uncertainty, understand the cycles of change and anticipate disruptions before they happen.​
In a world where disruption is constant, the ability to navigate ambiguity and anticipate change has never been more important.
