The Moving School
Nearly two decades ago, Colin Northmore, headmaster of a school nestled between Houghton and Hillbrow, noticed something troubling: while classrooms stood empty, children in the surrounding area had little access to education.

His radical idea to bring the two together gave rise to the Three2Six Project. Since then, Wits alumni have played a vital role in keeping this remarkable initiative going.

The Department of Social Work in collaboration with Lead Change and Philasonke organisations is pleased to invite the Wits Alumni to the 2026 Disability Indaba, which will take place on 29 September 2026 at the Flower Hall, Wits University.

The theme of this year’s Indaba is “Beyond Qualifications: Unlocking Potential and Advancing Inclusion’’, with a particular focus on the employability and inclusion of persons with disabilities. The event will bring together students, graduates, persons with disabilities, academics, government representatives, industry stakeholders, and organisations working in the disability sector.

We believe that the participation of Wits alumni would add significant value to the discussions and create opportunities for meaningful engagement, networking, mentorship, and collaboration.

Nelson Mandela’s Wits story is part of a much larger South African story, one of courage, learning and the pursuit of justice.

As Wits’ first Black law student, Nelson Mandela entered spaces that were not built to include him. Yet his life’s work became a call to build a more inclusive, united and compassionate society.

His legacy reminds us that true leadership is not only about standing firm but about bringing people together.

As we commemorate Mandela Day, we honour Madiba’s humanity, his commitment to unity, and his belief in a future shaped by dignity, courage and hope. May his example inspire each of us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, not only today, but every day.
