St Mark's College

St Mark's College St Mark's College, the oldest of the residential Colleges associated with universities in South Australia, opened its doors to students in 1925.

St Mark's College provides a supportive and stimulating environment where students pursue their optimum academic achievement. While aiming at the pursuit of excellence in specific fields of study at university, the College also promotes amongst its members a love of learning, and a critical approach to issues. The primary aims of collegiate life at St Mark's are to help engender in College members

a strong sense of the responsibilities and rights of individuals living in a community with others, and to instil in them an equally strong sense of commitment to the common good of our community. The College encourages its members to participate in the cultural, spiritual, social and sporting events arranged by the student leaders, and values the contributions members make to the life of the College through that participation. By providing an atmosphere in which students are accepted as mature and self-responsible, St Mark's aims to make a student's stay at College a fun, enjoyable, intellectual, and maturing experience. St Mark's is located in North Adelaide and has rooms for just over 230 students and student numbers are divided equally between males and females.

On Wednesday, students gathered for a special dinner and guest panel to acknowledge and celebrate the beginning of National Reconciliation Week.

Our Indigenous Student Advisor, Marley, did a wonderful job curating a 3-course menu featuring native ingredients and facilitating an insightful conversation around reconciliation in action.

Thank you Marley, for your hard work, and to the Honourable Kyam Maher MLC, Deputy Premier and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Dale Agius, the Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, Uncle Mickey O’Brien, senior Kaurna and Narungga man, and Demi Giakoumis, Specialist First Nations counsellor at Adelaide University, for attending the event and sharing your valuable insights. We are all in.

Last Friday students at the College hosted a Biggest Morning Tea event to raise money for Cancer Council Australia💛

Together, students raised $392 to support Cancer Council’s vital research, prevention, and support services.

The Charitable Foundation also launched a new initiative at the event, our very own St Mark’s Op Shop for students to buy and sell their clothing! All money raised is donated to one of this year’s charity.

St Mark’s recently held its annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture and Maths Faculty Evening, which was superbly organised and hosted by Academic Coordinator Hugo Hemmings.

Guests included Old Collegians Simon Emms, Chief Executive Officer of ElectraNet, and Darren Bain, a Senior Electronic Engineer at BAE Systems; as well as Sam Carrodus, a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Silentium Defence; James Lim, a Software Engineer at Optigrid; and Gabrielle Annese, an Aerospace Engineering Consultant at Nova Systems.

The guest speakers were welcomed and introduced to the members of the faculty over drinks and canapes in the Learning Commons before joining them for a special Formal Hall.

The topics of the Q&A discussion after dinner ranged from the benefits and risks of using artificial intelligence in the workplace, navigating imposter syndrome, working in a male dominated industry as a woman, standing out as graduates, and moving into management and leadership. Growth and grit were common themes of the conversation with all guests encouraging students to lean into discomfort in order to grow and learn and impress, and not be afraid to ask questions in the workplace. The speakers all encouraged students to reach out and connect with people who can serve as mentors or offer insight into an organisation or role, and all generously offered this sort of support to our students.

Congratulations to Hugo for assembling this brilliant panel and facilitating such a successful event, and thanks to our guest speakers for so generously sharing their time and expertise and offering so much practical advice to our students.

It was another big weekend at St Mark’s College with round 2 of HTC Football.

Congratulations to our men’s team, who took home the trophy for the first time in 6 years, and to our women’s team for finishing in second place! 🏆

The College is very proud of both our teams, who performed brilliantly in tough matches.

Round 2 is Indigenous Round, and it was wonderful to see each College adorning their Indigenous guernsey. Thank you to our very own Drew Willie for designing the St Mark’s guernsey.

Our women’s team also wore rainbow ribbons in support of IDAHOBIT!

On Sunday 17 May, St Mark's celebrated International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) with a morning tea around the pond. Our Charitable Foundation set up a vibrant space where students could get a warm beverage and learn more about the importance of IDAHOBIT.

At St Mark's College, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive space, with the key values in our Living Document being, integrity, collegiality, respect, growth, and generosity. ❤️
