Can a disease from the past become a challenge for the future? 😬

As vaccination rates decline in some communities and misinformation spreads online, important questions are being asked about public health and trust.

Join Distinguished Professor Steve Djordjevic, Associate Professor Marian-Andrei Rizoiu and award-winning ABC broadcaster Tegan Taylor for a timely Curiosities Live discussion, exploring vaccine science, the rise of misinformation, and what these trends could mean for the future.

When misinformation goes viral, the consequences can be very harmful.

Associate Professor Marian-Andrei Rizoiu is using data science and algorithms to understand how misinformation spreads online. Childhood immunisation rates have fallen since 2022, while Australians’ attitudes towards vaccines have also become more negative. Social media has been fertile ground for a vocal fringe to grow their anti-vaccination narrative.

Join UTS experts Distinguished Professor Steve Djordjevic and Associate Professor Marian-Andrei Rizoiu for this timely Curiosities Live conversation exploring the science behind vaccines and why misinformation spreads.

A first-of-its-kind scientific baseline is shining a light on the coral reefs of the Groote Archipelago in the Northern Territory πŸͺΈ

A two-year collaboration between Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers and UTS scientists has delivered the most detailed scientific picture yet of these little-studied reefs, bringing together Indigenous knowledge and modern science. The collaboration is also building local capability, with rangers now leading long-term reef monitoring using drones and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

While the reefs face environmental challenges, this research provides an important foundation for understanding their biodiversity, testing resilience and future conservation.

A study of Bradfield City’s First Building green roof confirms that combining native rooftop gardens with solar panels reduces urban heat, increases renewable energy generation and supports local biodiversity.

The research, led by UTS Associate Professor Peter Irga found that the biosolar green roof increased solar energy generation by up to 23.25 per cent during extreme heat events, while reducing roof temperatures by up to 28Β°C compared with a conventional roof.

πŸ’¬ "The roof acts as a giant natural filter, substantially reducing the volume of toxic metals entering urban stormwater networks," says Associate Professor Peter Irga.
