UTS marine biochemist Dr Jen Matthews has been awarded a prestigious L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship for her research exploring how nutrition can help coral reefs survive a changing ocean.

Her work studies how corals, microalgae and microbes exchange nutrients, and how these relationships change under environmental stress. Her research discovers new and practical ways to predict stress, protect surviving reefs and improve restoration.

How can we build a more resilient infrastructure with a lower carbon footprint?

A new $24 million national research centre led by UTS will develop sustainable ground engineering technologies, using recycled and low-carbon materials to transform civil construction.

The centre has received $5 million through the Australian Research Council Industrial Transformation Research Program, with a further $19 million in cash and in-kind contributions from industry and university partners. It will also help train the next generation of research and industry professionals.

💬 “We’ll bridge the gap between research and industry by addressing the shortage of skilled professionals equipped to apply advanced geotechnical technologies while using net zero-based and circular economy-inspired solutions," Distinguished Professor Buddhima Indraratna AM said.

A week to go until season kicks off 🥳

Over the past 30 years, the Australian Stuttering Research Centre (ASRC) has improved the lives of tens of thousands of adults, teenagers and children who stutter.

For father John Childs-Eddy, that work became deeply personal when his son, Sunny began to stutter.

💬 “Hearing Sunny stutter was one of the hardest things I've ever gone through,” John said.

Knowing early intervention could make a difference, the family turned to the ASRC’s treatment centre, where specialist speech pathologists helped Sunny develop the tools to manage his stuttering.

Their story reflects the impact of three decades of research at the ASRC, led by Professor Mark Onslow, Foundation Director, and his team. By bringing together research and clinical practice, the Centre has developed world-leading treatment programs that tackle stuttering head-on.

Stroke is the world’s second-leading cause of death. Around 46,000 Australians experience a stroke each year, with one in three survivors experiencing moderate to severe disability.

Could AI help us better understand stroke risk?

Research led by Jie Lu and Kai Guo at UTS has developed a new AI model that analyses DNA to identify genetic risk factors for stroke, bringing us a step closer to more personalised prevention and treatment.

We’re hearing more and more about microplastics but what exactly are they, how might they affect our health and what are some practical ways to reduce our exposure? 🤔

💬 “Microplastics are tiny plastic fragments, or synthetic polymers, that exist throughout supply chains and in the wider environment. They’ve been found in even the most remote places on Earth,” said one of the white paper authors, Professor Martina Linnenluecke from the UTS Centre for Climate Risk and Resilience.

UTS has upheld its ranking as a top 10 university in Australia 🎉

Securing the 8th spot in Australia and 152nd in the world in the 2027 Times Higher Education University Rankings. One of the most trusted global providers of ranking and performance data on universities around the world.

The outstanding result was underpinned by continuing strength in research quality – ranking 3rd in Australia and 54th in the world on the metric – reflecting the excellence and impact of UTS's research.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Andrew Parfitt highlighted that this strong performance reflects the hard work of our academics and professional staff.

"In a more competitive global environment, it's important to take stock of our many achievements in research and education..."

"Our world-class expertise in disciplines ranging from artificial intelligence to nursing is combining with the innovation of our industry partnerships to deliver practical solutions that improve the lives of all Australians."

The 2027 edition assessed 2,297 research-intensive institutions from 118 countries and territories, up from 2,191 institutions in the 2026 edition. Despite this, UTS maintained a strong global ranking and remained in the top 10 domestically 👏

While buildings like our 6-Star Green Star certified Vicki Sara Building demonstrate what's possible through sustainable design and engineering, some of UTS's biggest sustainability gains are coming from improving the performance of existing buildings across campus.

Over the past two years, a behind-the-scenes building optimisation program has reduced carbon emissions by around 4500 tonnes and delivered approximately $2.7 million in savings. This work has now been recognised, with UTS named a finalist in the 2026 Australasian Green Gown Awards in the Digital Futures and Climate Action categories 👏

Improved facilities management, asset optimisation, AI-enabled energy management, expanded battery storage and a transition away from gas-powered hot water systems are all helping UTS deliver measurable environmental and operational benefits.
