The Centre for Cultural Studies (CCS) was established in August 2014 by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) within the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies (CRS). The aim of the Centre is to serve as a platform for the promotion of research activities in the field of cultural studies.The missions of the Centre are as follows:

- to actively participate and play a leading role, at lo

cal, regional, and international levels, in academic exchanges and intellectual conversations on issues relating to the field of cultural studies;
- to consolidate research strength and expertise by stages within the department, faculty, university, and Hong Kong;
- to achieve research excellence in Hong Kong and the region by establishing collaborative links and projects with national and international research institutions.

2026 Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Summer School Livable Futures: Asia as Worlding

The future has become an emergency. We live amid collapsing climates, datafied borders, disinformation wars, and infrastructures stretched thin by carelessness and extraction. Crisis has hardened into habit, and the only horizon offered to us is survival. Livable Futures begins with the refusal of this horizon. It insists that the work of imagining and sustaining life cannot be deferred. To live โ€” now โ€” is to act within uncertainty, to build forms of relation, repair, and imagination that make the present inhabitable. Livability, as we frame it here, is not a condition but a mode of worlding: an ongoing act of making and maintaining the worlds we inhabit. To speak of liveable futures is to ask how worlds are built, by whom, and for whom โ€” and how they might be otherwise. This turn from Asia as method to Asia as worlding marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society as an invitation to think beyond knowledge as comparison, toward knowledge as cohabitation and composition. Worlding allows us to situate theory, art, activism, and pedagogy as entangled labours in the making of shared futures. Livability does not promise safety or comfort. It names a shared practice of composition โ€” of creating conditions where individuals and communities can endure, connect, and thrive even in exhaustion. It asks how we might inhabit the broken infrastructures of our times differently: how to turn technologies into gestures of care, stories into spaces of solidarity, and networks into collective acts of repair. This Summer School takes liveability as both question and method. It proposes that the future is not something we await but something we world โ€” a collective act of imagining, negotiating, and composing in the cracks of what already exists.

Our Centre co-organised a workshop with the theme of Mystical Creatures in Translation and Transformation: Morphing and Animals in Chinese Culture and Media on July 15th and 16th, 2026. The event was co-convened by Prof. Jia Tan from the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies and Prof. Sophie Ling-chia Wei from the Department of Translation at CUHK. The speakers presented and engaged in inspiring, multi-disciplinary discussions on the roles of morphing, animals, and mystical creatures across Chinese culture and media. Misbehaving celebrity, rural female, and q***r icon, this talk explores these multiple identities and the shifting fandom imaginaries surrounding Na Yina (aka ้‚ฃ่‰บๅจœ Lady Nana). Through the lens of Chinese q***r fandom, Lady Nana is reassembled within Chinese digital media, Chinese q***r culture, and platform governance. Her fluent figures, shaped by digital platforms and participatory culture, give rise to a Chinese q***r art of failure.
