The second Hong Kong Culture and Sustainability Conference, CU:SU2026, will take place on 12-13 October 2026. The conference has eight curated panels alongside a series of workshops and related events under CU:SU Plus umbrella. The theme of CU:SU 2026 is “Alliance for Action”, and this edition focuses on how ideas move into actions through international alliances and cross-disciplinary collaboration, responding to the broader needs of sustainable development through culture.

Professor Benny Lim (CUHK) continues to support this conference as co-convenor alongside Louis Yu (Hong Kong Culture and Sustainability Centre) and Professor Anna CY Chan (HKAPA). They are also co-editing a volume on ‘Culture and Sustainability in East and Southeast Asia’, which will be published by Springer Nature in the coming months.

Speaker: Prof. Zoy Anastassakis
An anthropologist and designer, Zoy Anastassakis is Associate Professor at the School of Industrial Design (ESDI), State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Brazil, where she currently serves as Director and coordinates the Design and Anthropology Laboratory (LaDA). Together with her colleagues, she has led initiatives to rethink and redesign campus life—an experience documented in her book, co-authored with Marcos Martins, Everyday Acts of Design: Learning in a Time of Emergency (Bloomsbury, Design in Dark Times series, 2022).

Kam-Fai Chan has been teaching in the Social Design programme at PolyU Design since its launch in 2017. His interests include design practice as sensemaking, the philosophy of social design, and the constellations between art, design, and social change. He is a founding member of Soil Trust (est. 2021), an eco-social design intervention for a soil-to-soil economy, which received the Don Norman Design Award in 2024.

Hong Kong Culture and Sustainability Conference 2026 is set to enter a new chapter. Co-presented and co-organised by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Hong Kong Culture and Sustainability Centre, this year’s conference titled “Alliance for Action” will take place on 12–13 October. Building on last year’s discussions on advocacy, practice and conservation, it further encourages the cultural sector to respond to the needs of sustainable development through international alliances and cross-disciplinary collaboration, putting culture into action.

📗The conference will feature dialogues, case sharing, practical discussions and CUSU plus, exploring different cultural contexts and approaches to practice.

Public Humanities @ CUHK: Why We Need "Public Humanities" to Navigate AI, Art Tech, and Biomedicine?

Technological and medical advancements rapidly transform societal structures, often outpacing systematic analysis of their broader implications. Public Humanities addresses this gap by bringing academic research into the public sphere. It encourages critical reflection on how emerging technologies shape cultural identity, ethics, and social institutions.

This video brings together three fields: Artificial Intelligence, Art Tech and Biomedicine. They raise similar questions about human values, social responsibility, and the impact of technology on everyday life. Public Humanities provides an integrative framework for examining these issues and identifying the challenges and blind spots that may emerge within technological and institutional systems. From algorithms and digital media to healthcare practices, Public Humanities helps ensure that technological development remains connected to human well-being, social inclusion, and the public good.

中大公共人文學：為什麼我們需要「公共人文學」來應對人工智能、科技藝術與生物醫學的發展？

當前科技與醫學的急速發展，正以前所未有的速度重塑社會結構。然而，這些發展對文化、社會及倫理所帶來的深遠影響，往往未能得到充分而系統的討論。公共人文學（Public Humanities）旨在連結學術研究與公共社會，推動公眾對新興科技及其影響進行批判性思考，並探討其對文化認同、倫理價值及社會制度的意義。

International screening of the independent media collective
AsiaVisions' Migrante (1987)
to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Bethune House

This is the first international public exhibition of the digitized, English-subtitled version of 'Migrante,' a landmark documentary by the independent media collective AsiaVisions about Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong during the global 1980s. Commemorating the 40th anniversary of Bethune House, the event is a part of a worldwide Migrant Workers Film Festival in different cities.
The speakers will talk about the legacy of the film and its filmmakers, including the archival and digitization process behind the re-release and the present conditions of domestic workers.
