Welcome All New HKPFS Awardees🌟

A wonderful morning of celebration, connection, and inspiration! We proudly hosted the HKPFS Awardees Reception 2026, welcoming brilliant new Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme awardees and their supervisors, and bringing the vibrant research community together.

The morning kicked off with inspiring welcoming remarks from Prof. Johnny P**n, Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research) cm Dean of the School of Creative Arts, setting an uplifting tone for the year ahead. This was followed by key updates and valuable guidance on the scheme delivered by Prof. Cheung King-Ho, Executive Associate Dean, Graduate School.

A core highlight of the reception was the student sharing session. Two senior HKPFS awardees and our Student Ambassadors, Yuehan DAI (Year 3, Department of History) and Richard Sam Dickson (Year 3, Department of Journalism), shared their invaluable journeys, tips, and personal experiences to help guide new awardees as they embark on their PhD adventures at HKBU.

Served with light refreshments, all the attendees stayed to connect and exchange ideas with each other.

A heartfelt thank-you to all university leaders, supervisors, and HKPFS awardees for making the community thrive! We look forward to supporting every scholar on their path to research excellence!

Sharing the Success of Academic Publishing Essentials in the AI Era: Publication and Peer Review

We were delighted to welcome researchers and students to the Trans-disciplinary Discovery Commons (TDDC) on 20 October 2026 for an insightful workshop: Academic Publishing Essentials in the AI Era: Publication and Peer Review.

It was a great honour to feature Claire Chentong Hao, Founder and Director of Every Author Publishing. Drawing on more than 12 years of publishing experience, Claire shared practical publishing strategies and insights into peer review, as well as support available to early-career researchers. She also highlighted the HKBU Every Author First Publication Scholarship.

Organised in collaboration with the Library and supported by the Research Office through Research Mingle, the workshop offered valuable guidance to our academic community, along with light refreshments. Thank you to everyone who joined us. The insights and practical strategies shared will surely support the participants’ research and publishing goals.

Meet Our Supervisor: Prof. Guo Meiyu from Department of Geography

Prof. Guo Meiyu is a tenured Associate Professor in Department of Geography and Assistant Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of HKBU. She earned a PhD in Geography from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She was also a visiting research fellow at Harvard University.

Prof. Guo’s publications include first- and corresponding-author papers in leading journals such as Joule, Nature Communications and Environmental Science & Technology, as well as a book published by Springer Nature. As principal investigator, she has received grants from the RGC Early Career Scheme and General Research Fund, and the NSFC Young Scientists Fund. She has also served as co-PI on projects supported by the NSFC/RGC Collaborative Research Scheme and the RGC Collaborative Research Fund.

Prof. Guo’s project, “Multi-scale Assessment of Methane Emissions from Energy Sector in China,” examines emissions from coal mining, oil and gas production, and energy transport. It combines emissions inventories and facility-level data with evidence from mobile, satellite and other atmospheric monitoring approaches. The project aims to identify major sources, assess uncertainties in existing estimates, and explore mitigation opportunities—supporting improved methane monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV), targeted mitigation strategies and policy development.

Check more details on Prof. Guo’s research group website.

Meet the Student Representative of Online Info Session: Yang Xin — PhD Candidate from School of Chinese Medicine

Yang Xin, a Talent100 PhD Scholar at HKBU, is affiliated with the Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies (ITS) and the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) under the supervision of Professor Zhang Ge. He will represent SCM in the upcoming HKBU Research Postgraduate (RPg) Programmes Online Information Sessions to share his experience and PhD journey.

Trained in biological science and computational biology, Yang builds AI frameworks to accelerate therapeutic aptamer development. His doctoral work connects computation with laboratory feedback—spanning early-round affinity prediction and chemical optimization to generative design and cell-targeted modelling—through tools such as DeepAptamer, DeepModify, AptGEN, and AlphaApta. An AptGEN-discovered candidate for Duchenne muscular dystrophy has received US FDA Orphan Drug and Rare Pediatric Disease designations.

Yang’s journey shows how transdisciplinary training can translate computational ideas into real therapeutic impact.
