Meet the Student Representative of Online Info Session: Kelly Deng — PhD in Marketing

Kelly Deng, a year 3 PhD Student in Marketing, will represent the School of Business in the coming HKBU Research Postgraduate (RPg) Programmes Online Information Sessions to share her experience and PhD journey in HKBU.

Kelly’s research explores how global policy changes and emerging technologies reshape international markets and consumer choices. Using large-scale international datasets and causal inference methods, Kelly examines how trade policies influence cross-border automobile sales, media sentiment, and firm performance—advancing policy-relevant insights with real-world impact.

Beyond her core projects, Kelly is passionate about AI-enabled decision-making and transformative consumer research. At HKBU, she collaborates across disciplines and contributes to the community as a Student Ambassador of the Graduate School and a College Tutor, crediting the University’s supportive and caring environment for strengthening both communication skills and wholesome development.

With the generous support of the Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun Charitable Fund (est. 2022/23), this annual ceremony recognises outstanding PhD research at HKBU. Highlights include six nominee presentations from every faculty and school spanning Arts & Social Sciences, Business, Chinese Medicine, Communication, Creative Arts, and Science & Technology; live audience voting for your favourite nominee; and light refreshments for networking.

Research topics range from role-play games to enhance youth resilience, human–GenAI relationships, and safeguarding online events, to jazz in the digital era, selectively responsive organic photodetectors, and AI-driven rapid aptamer discovery. Stay tuned with us for individual introductions of the nominees.

WEsearcher at HKBU: LUO Ziyuan, a PhD student in Computer Science from Sichuan, safeguards intellectual property of 3D contents

During LUO Ziyuan’s PhD journey, supervised by Prof. Renjie Wan at the Department of Computer Science, Ziyuan tackled a defining question: as neural 3D representations become valuable digital assets, how do we protect their intellectual property?

This journey was supported by HKBU’s international research environment. Ziyuan presented at top conferences in cities such as Paris, Milan, and Singapore. Dialogues with leading scholars sharpened his thinking on problem formulation, evaluation, and robustness, while collaborations with researchers including Prof. Boxin Shi (Peking University), Prof. Anderson Rocha (Unicamp), and Prof. Jun Liu (Lancaster University) grew into long-term partnerships that continue to shape his directions.
These experiences helped Ziyuan grow from a newcomer to an independent researcher. He is grateful for Prof. Wan’s guidance and mentorship throughout this journey. Recently awarded the RGC Junior Research Fellowship Scheme, he will continue his work at HKBU, aiming to deliver outcomes with both academic significance and real-world impact.
Ziyuan’s story showcases how HKBU’s mentorship, resources, and global networks empower research postgraduates to grow, connect, and contribute—embodying the “WE” in WEsearcher.
