Exciting news from the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering! Dr Edin Omerdic, MARINEX Project Lead is helping shape the future of Ireland’s renewable energy industry through an innovative project focused on advancing underwater robotics technologies for the offshore wind sector.

As offshore wind developments continue to grow, intelligent robotic systems will play a vital role in inspecting, monitoring, and maintaining critical underwater infrastructure, helping to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

👏 Congratulations to our researchers from the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering, University of Limerick, who recently showcased their work at the National Cyber Security Conference and Cyber Expo.

Our researchers presented innovative projects addressing some of the biggest cybersecurity challenges of the future, including:

Made in China: UL delegation's Chinese visit enhances partnerships

University of Limerick (UL) delegation, including University President Shane Kilcommins and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Kenneth Stanton, recently visited China. The primary purpose of the visit was to attend the Sino-Irish Transnational Education event in Beijing, hosted by James Lawless TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. The event was also attended by representatives from several other Irish higher education institutions.

The delegation also visited UL’s partner institutions, Shandong University of Technology (SDUT) and Limerick Institute College Henan Polytechnic University (LICHPU), for a series of meetings. These visits were very positive and provided an opportunity to strengthen existing partnerships and explore opportunities for further collaboration in transnational education.

The Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Limerick has played an important role in supporting and developing these partnerships. This includes the development of academic programmes delivered through UL and ECE, as well as the ongoing contribution of ECE academics who travel to China to teach modules on these programmes. This academic engagement reflects the department’s commitment to international collaboration, knowledge sharing and the continued development of transnational education opportunities.

We look forward to building on these strong relationships and further developing our international partnerships in the coming years. Special thanks to Yi Bao from the Office of the Vice President for Global and Community Engagement for coordinating the visit and helping to make it such a success.

UL led Cyber Unite project team attendeds NCSC Cyber Security Conference & Expo

he University of Limerick showcased its leadership in cybersecurity research last week at the NCSC Cyber Security Conference and Expo, held in Dublin from 6–8 October 2026. The conference was one of the official events of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, bringing together cybersecurity experts from across Europe, including members of the Cyber Unite project team, to discuss the growing importance of cybersecurity and collaboration in this area.

The Cyber Unite project is led at the University of Limerick by Professor Donna O’Shea and Professor Tom Newe from the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering. The €4 million research programme brings together universities and industry partners from across the island of Ireland. Working alongside Queen’s University Belfast, Munster Technological University, University College Cork and Gas Networks Ireland, the Cyber Unite team is developing innovative approaches to strengthen cybersecurity research, collaboration and expertise.

The event also saw Research Ireland and the National Cyber Security Centre announce a new Cyber Security Innovation Challenge, inviting researchers from different disciplines to collaborate on creative solutions to cybersecurity challenges. The initiative provides an exciting opportunity to build on Ireland’s growing cybersecurity research expertise and strengthen collaboration between academia, industry and government.

Three engineering researchers awarded almost 700K for ECODESIGN Doctoral Network

Congratulations to three of our engineering researchers, Associate Professor Eoin Hinchy (School of Engineering) Associate Professor Eoin O'Connell and Professor Colin Fitzpatrick (Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering), who have been awarded €682,000 as part of the €4.6 million ECODESIGN Doctoral Network.
The goal of ECODESIGN, a MSCA Doctoral Network, is to train a new generation of experts capable of driving the transition toward environmentally sustainable and circular products in the EU market. It brings together nine leading universities and a range of industrial partners to train 15 doctoral candidates through interdisciplinary and intersectoral research. The programme is aligned with key EU policies, including the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the Circular Economy Action Plan, and seeks to strengthen European competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability.
The project is structured around five core pillars - Performance, Information, Planet, People, and Prosperity - delivered through dedicated work packages. It develops advanced ecodesign frameworks to support reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling, enabled by Industry 5.0 technologies and human–robot collaboration. Key innovations include Digital Product Passports (DPPs) and data-driven tools to improve lifecycle transparency, alongside methods for assessing environmental, social, and economic impacts.

Huge congratulations to our very own Professor Pepijn van de Ven, on securing €10.7 million to lead PREPAIR, a major international programme training the next generation of researchers in responsible, trustworthy AI! 🎉👏 Proud to see UL and ECE leading the way!

University of Limerick is to lead a major multi-million euro international project aimed at improving the AI expertise of the European workforce.

Professor Pepijn van de Ven, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, has been awarded €10.7 million for the large-scale researcher training programme PREPAIR, which will train a new generation of researchers capable of advancing responsible, trustworthy and societally aligned AI.

Rolling the D²iCE on the future of AI

he D²iCE Research Group hosted within the Electronic & Computer Engineering Dept. had their annual Research Day last week where their researchers had the opportunity to present their research updates and stay informed about the group's research interests.

D²iCE brings together more than 40 researchers across multiple UL faculties (mostly Science and Engineering) uniting expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, AI Governance, and Immersive Technologies. The Centre is focused on generating real-world impact through ethical, sustainable, and interdisciplinary AI research.
