Congratulations to three recent alumni for being named finalists in the biennial Design Emphasis Student Furniture Competition!

In the Accent Furniture category, Ximena Fenco ’26 was recognized for “Serenite,” a Scandinavian-inspired coffee table, while Damien Joseph ’26 earned recognition for “Intraforma,” a storage-forward coffee table blending modern minimalism with avant-garde influences.

In the Design Creativity category, Dawson Emerson ’26 was nominated for “Hollow,” a wooden stool inspired by the Appalachian foothills and designed to support his work as a folk singer-songwriter.

Eight students transformed real-world industry challenges into developed, thoughtful design concepts during a fast-paced, 24-hour sprint held at Auburn University Urban Studio.

Students worked in pairs with Fox Factory Vehicles, ExpoDisplays - A division of Culton Companies, Inc., Peak Season - Inspired Visions and Hirschfeld Marketing Solutions - HMS to research unfamiliar subjects, make decisions under pressure and clearly communicate their ideas.

Assistant Professor Mario Bocanegra Martinez recently received a Gold Award in the Graphis International Poster Awards 2027 for his design for SIGD’s inaugural William Dunlop Lecture. His winning design is showcased in the publication’s annual, alongside 192 other international works.

“Inspiration comes from collecting a wide range of materials and objects without always knowing how I will use them,” Bocanegra Martinez said. “I enjoy using the camera as an exploratory tool rather than simply as a means of documentation.”

Industrial Design student Mia Spilotro was recently named the Grand Prize winner in the 2026 LEGO Design Student Challenge, a competition that challenges design students to create an original concept using LEGO products.

Spilotro developed “SMART Play Music Studio,” a modular and customizable music system with embedded lights and sounds to prompt adult users to experiment with music.
