Chocolate, xylitol and raisins, oh my! 😱☠️

As Halloween approaches, Dr. Kathy Gerken from our Emergency & Critical Care team says it's essential to keep your pets away from those three ingredients this Halloween. All of them can cause serious health problems (especially for dogs), including vomiting, diarrhea, elevated heart rate and, in severe cases, life-threatening complications.

☎️ If your pet gets into any of these foods, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Want to include your pets in the festivities? 🎃 Opt for pet-friendly treats like shredded carrots, cucumber, bananas, peanut butter and even frozen wet dog/cat food.

Stay safe, keep the candy out of paw's reach and have a happy Halloween! 🐶🐈‍⬛

Solving complex cases often takes more than a single veterinarian. 🤝

🔎 When a mysterious illness struck a cattle herd, experts from across Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine worked together to connect the clues. The cow’s history, diagnostic testing and necropsy findings came together like puzzle pieces, and the interdisciplinary team unraveled the mystery — it was oak poisoning.

While oak poisoning isn't uncommon, it can be difficult to diagnose. The case highlights the value that thorough histories, collaboration across disciplines and post-mortem examinations can have in identifying underlying issues and preventing further issues.

This week, four Auburn Vet Med students put their communications skills to the test during the Auburn University Graduate School's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition! 🗣️🏆

More than 60 graduate students from across campus participated in the preliminary round, where competitors were challenged to explain their research to a broad audience in just three minutes. Presentations were judged on engagement, communication and comprehension.

Representing Auburn Vet Med were:

🐄 Hannah Kelley – "The The Epididymis: Unlocking Insights into Male Fertility"
🐷 Aliki Kalpourtzidou – “From Oink to Achoo: A Potential Pandemic Flu”
🧬 Samantha Mejia – “Developing Plug and Play Therapeutics in Cancer"
🐔 Vinicius Apolloni – “How Do Chickens Fight Back Against Bird Flu?”

The top 10 presenters will advance to the finals for a chance to win cash prizes, and the overall winner will compete regionally.

🐕 CVM PET OF THE WEEK: Each week, we're spotlighting the pets that inspire and support the Auburn Vet Med family. 🤎

Meet Gerty, Mia Jaco's German shorthaired pointer who is always ready to lace up her favorite running shoes. 👟

Gerty's journey started at the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital after being struck by a car when she was just 6 months old. Thanks to multiple surgeries and the generosity of donors to the Pet Emergency Fund, she made a full recovery.

Once Gerty was ready for her forever home, Mia adopted her, and the two have been running full speed ahead ever since. When they're not out for a jog, Gerty is busy smiling for the camera.

"So grateful to the Pet Fund for everything they did for her and to the CVM for saving her life and giving me my best girl!" Mia said.

Every day, visitors come to Auburn Vet Med to seek care for their animals, engage with students or collaborate with researchers.

Today's visitor traveled a little farther than most, but he's no stranger to Auburn. 🇬🇧

We were excited to welcome Paul Mortimer, better known on social media as British Auburn Fan, to the Auburn Vet Med campus for a tour with Dr. Amelia White, clinical professor of dermatology.

Mortimer's Auburn story began with watching a football game unlike any other — the "Kick Six" win over Alabama in 2013 — from across the Atlantic. His fandom has only grown. From the tattoo of a golden eagle on his left arm to the "25 Years of War Eagle Flights" Auburn University Raptor Center T-shirt beneath his AU hoodie, he's orange and blue through and through.

Congratulations to Dr. Laura Anna Cain! 👏

A professor of practice at our Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Dr. Cain has been awarded a scholarship to pursue acupuncture certification through the Chi Institute, expanding her skillsets to further serve her patients.

The scholarship was funded by Auburn Vet Med alumna Dr. Karen Knarr, who has been a certified veterinary acupuncturist since 2005. Thanks to Dr. Knarr for her generosity and investment in Auburn veterinarians!

🧬 From supporting the college's Gene Machine breast cancer research initiative to sponsoring a litter of Auburn University's Canine Performance Sciences puppies, Rebecca and Robert Poire believe in investing in work that offers high potential impact. 🐕

"The college’s work is meaningful to us, but more than that, it’s meaningful to the world,” Robert said. “Whether it’s cancer research or dogs protecting airports and schools, it’s going beyond Auburn — our gifts are helping the college to do good across the globe.”
