Meet Cousteau, DVM student Shana Boyd’s 3-year-old golden lab. Shana met Cousteau while training him through her undergraduate program and later adopted him when he turned one.

Whether he's fetching tennis balls or showing off his favorite trick — a perfect wave — Cousteau lives life full of energy, ready to tackle life by Shana’s side. 💛

"I truly don't know how I would be getting through veterinary school without him,” Shana said.

Baby Cowboy is at Auburn University today, where he underwent a lifesaving heart procedure this afternoon to repair his congenital heart defect - pulmonic valve stenosis.

The easiest way to understand Cowboy’s condition is to think of a garden hose with water flowing normally through it 💦 Now imagine squeezing part of that hose, making the opening much narrower. The water can still get through, but it takes much more pressure to push it past that narrowed area. That’s essentially what has been happening inside Cowboy’s heart. His pulmonic valve is abnormally narrow, forcing his heart to work much harder to pump blood through it and creating a dangerously high pressure gradient across the valve.

This afternoon, Cowboy underwent a successful balloon valvuloplasty. During the procedure, a tiny balloon was guided into the narrowed valve and inflated to stretch it open - essentially opening up Cowboy’s “hose” so blood can flow through more freely and bringing that excessive pressure down to a much healthier level ❤️

And if you’re wondering just how brave this little buckaroo is, this photo says it all. Here he is walking the halls at Auburn, back in the very same place where he underwent emergency, lifesaving surgery for a diaphragmatic hernia just a few weeks ago. Today, he returned to face his second lifesaving procedure in less than a month. That is an awful lot for a little 4 month old puppy to go through. But Cowboy continues to meet every challenge with the sweetest spirit, a wagging tail, and more courage than seems possible for such a little guy.

We’ll share more as we hear from his team at Auburn and as our brave boy begins his recovery. Tonight, we are simply so grateful for the incredible team caring for him and that Cowboy’s had been given the gift of life with his repaired heart ❤️‍🩹

Dr. Dwight Wolfe `77, a professor emeritus in food animal medicine and theriogenology who served the CVM for more than 35 years, passed away on August 20. He was 81 years old.

A service celebrating Dr. Wolfe’s life will be held at Auburn United Methodist Church in the sanctuary on Sunday, August 30 at 2 p.m.

During his career, he held leadership positions in the Beef and Food Animal sections and served as head of the Department of Large Animal Surgery and Medicine for seven years.

While at Auburn, Wolfe helped educate more than 4,000 veterinary students and served on graduate committees for more than 30 graduate students. Nationally recognized for his expertise, Wolfe served as president of the Society of Theriogenology and American College of Theriogenology. He also served on the editorial board of Theriogenology.

In addition to editing and co-authoring a textbook on large animal urogenital surgery, he authored or co-authored 25 additional book chapters, 41 abstracts, and 69 refereed journal articles. Wolfe also secured more than $600,000 in research funding while at Auburn.

Among his many honors were induction into the Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame (2006), the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association Distinguished Service Award (2009), and the College of Veterinary Medicine Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2010). The dedication of the D.F. Wolfe Food Animal Barn on the CVM campus in 2006 serves as testament to his impactful teaching, mentorship and scholarship.

In 2012, he earned the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Bartlett Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Society of Theriogenology.

Dogs have always been the best study buddies. 🐾📚

Long before laptops and tablets, this pup was holding down a seat at Auburn Vet Med. Whether in the classroom, the clinic or at home after a long day, dogs have always had a way of making each moment a little better.

In this blast from the past (1938!), former students Ben Hutson and Joe Stein are seen attending a therapeutics class with their dog, Jerry, at what was then known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute.

✨ CVM SPOTLIGHT: Today we're recognizing Scott Brown, the creative force behind the visuals that help tell the Auburn Vet Med story. 👨‍🎨

Scott recently received a Staff Recognition Award, which recognizes CVM employees who demonstrate outstanding performance, positivity and great interpersonal skills. As the college's graphic designer, Scott has a unique talent for transforming ideas into compelling visuals that capture the heart of a project.

😸 CVM PET OF THE WEEK: Each week, we're introducing the pets behind the people of Auburn Vet Med.

Meet Cheeto Puff, a three-year-old tabby cat named for his snacky tendencies.

"He is a fat cat at heart," said Cheeto's owner, Ashantae Nelson (DVM Class of 2028). "We've worked very hard to keep him on the slimmer side, much to his dismay."

Where there's food, you'll find Cheeto trying to steel it. His favorite? Bread of any kind. Sandwich bread, hotdog buns, tortillas — Cheeto doesn't discriminate. To keep him active, Ashantae uses a treat launcher that sends him sprinting across the room as soon as he hears it rattle.

When he's not on the hunt for snacks, Cheeto can usually be found napping belly-up with his favorite catnip ball nearby. 🧡🐾🧡
