Meet Global Ambassador Caroline Scott who studied in Santander, Spain at Universidad de Cantabria!

"My time in Santander has been incredible. I have been living with a host family, and I have loved learning about their lives, sharing meals with them, spending days outside the city together, and practicing my Spanish every day at home. I came to Santander hoping to speak more fluently, but I never imagined I would leave feeling like I had gained a second family and such a meaningful understanding of Spanish culture.

Thoughts about coursework:
-SPN 328C Introduction to Literatures and Cultures through the University of Cantabria. We have explored the rich history of Spain, as well as our wonderful city of Santander. As someone who loves to learn, it has been amazing to study Roman, Gothic, and Muslim architecture in class and later traveling to cities across Spain recognizing these styles with my classmates firsthand.
-SPN 367C Spanish for Medical Professions with a UT professor. We have studied medical Spanish vocabulary while discussing cultural differences in healthcare settings/how they can affect patient care. We have practiced how Spanish grammar applies in medical interpreting activities. Both classes have greatly enriched both my experience studying abroad and my education at UT.

Living with a host family added a whole other dimension to studying abroad. It gave me an honest view of what everyday life is like for a family living in Santander. I could not recommend this part of studying abroad enough, it made all the difference in my experience and is truly the best way to experience immersion. One conversation that stood out was with my host sister, Claudia, where we discussed the differences between medical education in Spain and the U.S., sharing our experiences and perspectives as aspiring doctors.

Highlights have included:
-Traveling to Salamanca, León, Barcelona, and Madrid
-Celebrating the World Cup win
-Tasting Spanish cuisine
-Creating a lifelong connection with my host family
-Bonding with a unique group of UT students and practicing my Spanish daily.

I am incredibly grateful for this experience and for everyone who made it so special. This experience is one I will never forget!"

"Being able to explore rainforests and hike through the rain and mud, volunteer at elderly living homes, work with special needs individuals, go on excursions for class, and celebrate my birthday in the first foreign country I’ve ever visited has been rewarding beyond what words could ever describe.

If you’re reading this wondering whether studying abroad is worth it, or waiting until you feel completely ready, consider this your sign. There will probably never be a perfect time, and you’ll always be able to find another reason to wait."

Meet Global Ambassador Rebecca Hong sharing her experience from participating in the exchange program "Engaging Global Health in Costa Rica" in Heredia, Costa Rica!

"Hola! Me llamo Becca 🤗

I'm a junior nursing student studying abroad, staying in a host home in Heredia, Costa Rica. I've loved living in this beautiful city. I'm taking Spanish for Healthcare Professionals and Global Health. These two courses are already in my degree plan and are essential for my career as a future nurse. I arrived in Costa Rica without speaking any Spanish, but now I'm able to communicate comfortably with my host mom. She is sweet, warm, funny, an amazing chef, and a diva.

Studying in Costa Rica has been an astounding experience, even better than I imagined it would be. I have unforgettable memories of trudging through the muddy rainforest, getting knocked over by powerful waves at the beach, climbing a volcano, and seeing countless waterfalls, all with my new friends!

The people I've met on our class excursions are shaping me into a better person and future nurse by deepening my empathy and strengthening my compassion. Every encounter and adventure here has been filled with love, joy, and, of course, fun.

This post is just a glimpse of my fantastic time here in Costa Rica. With the rest of my time here, I want to soak in everything Costa Rica has to offer and eat as much delicious fruit as possible. Thanks for reading and following along!

Pura vida! 🤸‍♂️🇨🇷💝🦥🤙🌋🥭"

"While living in Lisbon, I’ve learned that there is no reason to rush through life. Embracing the slower pace here has allowed me to truly experience the people, culture, and everyday moments that make this journey so meaningful. Being here has taught me that living sustainably isn’t just about protecting the environment; it’s also about slowing down, appreciating new experiences, and being present in every moment."

"The moment I got accepted into the SPICE program, I knew I had to take a trip to Kraków, Poland. I’ve always had a deep appreciation for history, and it wasn’t until I sat down to plan my excursions that I realized how much there is to do in a city steeped in the weight of the past, where royal legacies and medieval grandeur exist alongside some of humanity’s darkest chapters."
